Immigration, Job-hunting and Visas PDF Print E-mail

Singapore adopts an open immigration policy with a strong belief in human resource as the most valuable and important tool in the country's economic growth. In recent months, the government has also spoken of the need to attract even more foreigners--whom the government calls "Foreign Talent". (The word "foreign" is not a pejorative in this part of the world. It is preferred over "alien".) Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, no less, has put his full backing behind this policy.

However, there is some concern that less expensive and talented foreigners could displace equally talented but more expensive locals. As you will learn, when the Singapore government plans something, it puts its muscle behind it to ensure it gets done. There are therefore several initiatives to attract Foreign Talent (yes, it's even acquired the capital letters) to work, live and play in Singapore.

Immunisation Requirements

The only disease for which immunisation is required internationally is yellow fever. Singapore law requires yellow fever immunisation for anybody coming into the country who is above one year old and who, within the previous 6 months, have been in or passed through 32 listed African countries and 10 South American countries.
However, in accordance with the World Health Organisation's guidelines, it is recommended that you be immunised against such diseases as:

  • hepatitis A
  • hepatitis B
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • meningococcal meningitis
  • rabies
  • tuberculosis
  • typhoid fever

You can get you immunizations here in Singapore if you are unable to obtain them in your home country. You should not have any trouble getting through immigration as they normally do not check for immunizations unless you are coming from an area where Yellow Fever is prevalent, (Africa and South America).

Visa Requirements:

You don't need a visa if you're from Western Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, ASEAN countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand, excluding Vietnam and Myanmar).

You need a visa if you're from Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Cambodia, Georgia, India, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, People's Republic of China, Russia, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen
