A serviced apartment may best be described as a residential apartment serviced as a hotel. So you get the creature comforts and privacy of home--all apartments are fully furnished--with the amenities and conveniences of a hotel, including daily maid service.

Unfortunately, the price is also something between that of a hotel and a residential apartment. Still, a serviced apartment may work if, first, you are looking for an apartment or, second, if you are on a short-term contract, say six months or a year.

Location

Most of the serviced apartments are in the prime residential districts of 9, 10 and 11, catering to families. There are apartments within spitting distance (figuratively aimed, please) of the financial districts to serve the frequent-travelling businessman.

Most of the listings below offer apartments with the full range of bedrooms--from studio to three-bedroom. But only a few offer balconies, a choice of decor, in-house office suites, or room service.

Average floor areas of serviced apartments range from about 550 sq ft (50 sq m) for a studio to 1,500 sq ft (135 sq m) for a three-bedroom unit. Penthouses are larger and vary in floor areas. Rentals range from S$4,000 for a studio to about S$18,000 for a penthouse in a prime location.

Lanson Place Winsland Serviced Residences

The Ascott is located just off the shopping belt of Orchard Road. It offers a choice of studio, one- and two-bedroom units and three-bedroom penthouses. All units have separate living, dining and sleeping areas and a fully equipped kitchen.

Services: complimentary breakfast, daily maid service, 24-hour security and concierge, laundry and dry cleaning and business services.
Facilities: in-house launderette, bar and lounge and fitness centre.
Special services: complimentary airport transfer, complimentary golfing at the Palm Spring Golf and Country Club in Batam, Indonesia, free entry for four to the Singapore Zoo's Night Safari.
The Ascott comprises 169 apartments housed on top of an upscale shopping mall on Scotts Road called, well, Scotts. Nearby are fast food joints, bookstores, and expresso cafes to refresh body, mind and soul.
Rates: from S$250 per day for a studio, with a minimum stay of a week.

Cairnhill Towers

Also at Scotts Road is Cairnhill Towers, a 22-storey building with 72 apartments and four penthouses, which feature a large roof terrace for entertaining.

Central Square

This development, slated to open in March comprises 128 apartment and 52 serviced office suites on the edge of the Central Business District. It is within walking distance of the Singapore River, close to Chinatown and the financial district.

Darby Park

Darby Park Executive Suites on quiet, tree-lined Orange Grove Road comprises one- to three-bedroom apartments and three Premier Suites. It is next door to Shangri-La Hotel, five minutes away from Orchard Road and comes with a range of recreational facilities.

Services: comprehensive secretarial services, dry-cleaning and laundry, 24-hour security.
Facilities: carpark with direct lift access to all suites, launderette, gym, swimming pool, sauna, steambath, tennis court, putting green and driving bay.

Far East Plaza Deluxe Serviced Apartments

The development is on Scotts Road. It has eight types of apartments and five types of penthouses. All units have balconies.

Services: Maid service.

Fraser Place Robertson Walk

New apartments that opened in April 1998, Fraser Place comprises a total of 163 serviced residences, 39 one-bedroom, 75 two-bedroom, 47 three-bedroom units and two penthouse suites. All come with balconies overlooking the Singapore River or the Robertson Walk courtyards. Fraser Place is designed like a Mediterranean-styled village with shops and restaurants at the adjacent Robertson Walk

Features: full furnishing, well-equipped kitchen, personal computer in every room, two colour televisions, interactive web television, VCR and DVD players, Bose entertainment system, in-room personal safe, original artwork.
Services: two-way shuttle service to business and shopping districts, grocery/food delivery service from selected list, complimentary daily continental breakfast from Mondays to Fridays.
Facilities: executive lounge, "all day" cafe, fitness centre, swimming pool, barbecue pits, as well as an indoor playroom and outdoor playground for children.
Special Facilities: This place is designed to appeal to families with young children. On request the apartments can be outfitted with safety gadgets such as protective covers for electrical sockets, cupboard door latches, kitchen gates, rubber for corners and safety plugs. Other child-friendly facilities include a thematic kiddies package for the two and three-bedroom units, which come complete with Disney-themed bedlinen sets, playpen, kiddies table and chairs, night light and baby bath. Residents can also opt for a la carte amenities such as high chairs, children's' utensils and strollers.

Fraser Suites River Valley

Fraser Suites at River Valley, Fraser Place's sister development, was only recently completed in May 1998. It is conveniently located no more than 10 minutes away from the Central Business District and Orchard Road.

The apartments are connected to Valley Point, an integrated development that includes retail, restaurants and a 20-storey office tower. There are altogether 98 studios, 113 two-bedroom and 34 three-bedroom units and six penthouses.

Fraser Suites is targeted at the businessman: it aims to be the first serviced apartment in Singapore to provide secretarial and business support and a library-cum-lounge. Residents can choose apartments with fully equipped study rooms to enable them.

Le Grove Serviced Apartments is a resort-like development tucked away on quiet Orange Grove Road, close to the Shangri-La Hotel. It houses 97 one- to three-bedroom units. New residents find the place most often through word-of-mouth referral.

Services: housekeeping, linen services, concierge, 24-hour security.
Facilities: swimming pool, fully-equipped gym, residents' lounge, tennis and squash courts, sauna, business centre.
Rates: from S$6,500 (per month) for a one-bedroom unit to S$11,500 (per month) for a three-bedroom one. Minimum lease period is one week, but a premium of S$300 is chargeable for less than a month lease.

Orange Court Service Residences

Orange Court Service Residences is located just a stone's throw away from Orchard Road, offering easy access to Singapore's shopping and entertainment district. Spacious one or two bedroom suites, with an area of 780 sq ft and 1200 sq ft respectively, are available for lease.

Services: Personal maid service with daily bed-making, frequent change of towels and linen. 24-hour security.
Facilities: Gymnasium, sauna, swimming pool, resident's lounge and carpark with direct lift access to all apartments.

Orchard Parksuites

Orchard Parksuites is located in the heart of Orchard Road, right next to the Orchard MRT station. Each apartment is fully self-contained and features fully carpeted flooring as well as ensuite full marble bathroom. There are one-bedroom lofts, two and three bedroom apartments and up to 4-bedroom penthouses to choose from.

Services: Housekeeping, laundry and dry cleaning services, 24-hour security, full secretarial, typing, photocopying and courier services, 24-hour concierge, round-the-clock maintenance
Facilities: Cable TV, video-on-demand, business centre, PABX with IDD, swimming and wading pools with underwater music, steam and sauna rooms, gymnasium, tennis courts, jacuzzi, BBQ pits, children's playground.

Shangri-La Apartments

When the tourism authorities denied Shangri-La Hotel permission to add more rooms, the hotel came up with Shangri-La Apartments with 127 units. Residents here can enjoy the world-famous service of Shangri-La, signing privileges and special arrangements for the use of the health club.

Services: daily housekeeping services, 24-hour concierge and business centre, babysitting, food and beverage delivery, shuttle bus, limousine and taxi services.
In-apartment facilities: local and IDD telephone lines, safe, fax machine, home entertainment centre, fully-equipped, modern kitchen.
Facilities: swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis court, jogging track, barbecue pit, meeting rooms.
Rates: Monthly from S$7,500 for a one-bedroom deluxe unit to S$11,700 for a three-bedroom premier suite.
