From what used to be an old school and church, Chijmes (pronounced chimes) was refurbished and transformed into what is now like a little enclosed village with restaurants, caf's, bars, boutiques, galleries and greenery, while at the same time retaining its cobbled Victorian charm. As well as the Gothic chapel built in 1890, Chijmes also encompasses Caldwell House - the oldest freestanding house in Singapore. Now popular with yuppies, after-office drinkers and tourists, the restaurants within Chijmes' walls offer all types of cuisine from Chinese to Mediterranean and the variety of bars allow for romantic conversation in spots such as Ocho, hard clubbing at China Jump and live music at Insomnia. As evening falls Chijmes takes on a magical atmosphere when the trees light up and the sounds of jazz and laughter fill the fountain court. From Chijmes it's a short walk to the watering holes located at Raffles hotel (The Long Bar, The Bar & Billiard Room), Raffles The Plaza and Swissotel The Stamford (Somerset's Bar, Equinox) and Suntec City where you can find a number of bars and restaurants including one of Singapore's two microbrewery's Paulaner Brauhaus.
