Your Consumer Rights

Complaints

At one time, it was a curse to be Caucasian and to walk down Lucky Plaza along Orchard Road. Touts with offers of fake watches would approach expat or tourist alike. The problem has died down, although you should be wary of any offer that sounds too good to be true.
Should you get into a dispute with a retailer, contact the Small Claims Tribunal at Apollo Centre (Tel: 435-5937, Fax: 435-5994). Cases are usually heard within a day; the fee is just $10; and you won’t need a lawyer and high legal fees.

Consumer rights

Unethical salespeople, defective goods or shoddy workmanship can really spoil your day. Should you encounter such unpleasant experiences, contact the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) - a non-profit organisation that has been championing consumer rights in Singapore for more than 20 years. Do note that you must become a member (for a minimal fee) before CASE can act for you. CASE investigates cases of unfair prices, unsafe products, unscrupulous selling methods, deception and misrepresentation. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine and consumer guides, and organises seminars for its members.

If your complaint involves a travel agent, try the NATAS Travel Service Bureau (NTSB), an organisation that counts half of the travel agents here as registered members. The NTSB is at:

NATAS Travel Services Bureau

If you feel your renovator or contractor has short-changed you while carrying out works in your home, there is also redress available. The right people to go to are the Renovation Conciliation and Arbitration Procedures Programme (RECAP). The fee is $20 per case and most cases are settled within a month.

Renovation Conciliation and Arbitration Procedures Programme
#03-156, IMM Building, 2 Jurong East St 21

And finally, if your complaint is about furniture quality or furniture delivery, you may want to try the Singapore Furniture Industries Council.

Singapore Furniture Industries Council
#02-110 / 111, Singapore Furniture Design Centre, 2 Jurong East St
Tel: 568-2626
