Enjoying Singapore: Bar Savanh PDF Print E-mail
If you like an indulgent atmosphere that goes heady on the senses, Bar SaVanh (meaning Heaven) will be a place to get a heavy dosage of sight, sound and scent. Its theme is definitively modern, Orient and bordering on the New Age with an emphasis on pampering the spirit and soul.

The first thing that hits you is how the place looks. Bar SaVanhs decor will have your jaw hanging out. Split into two zones connected by a wooden "bridge" and a three floor waterfall, patrons choose to either hang out on a six-metre-long opium bed or relax on low comfortable ottomans. Seats next to the impressive waterfall and pond (that holds carp and the like) are the hotspots. The numerous sculptures that adorn the walls are also interesting conversation pieces as well. Cambodian in origins, it reflects strongly on the owner Michael Mahs heritage.

The first-time bar owner explains that although the sculptures they used have some form of religious background back home, here at Bar SaVanh, it takes on a more lifestyle approach. "I asked myself whether I could live here," says Michael, who also adds that the decor focuses more on its aesthetic value rather than religious reasons. The bar has already won the Architects Award for Best Design.

The music remains primarily fusion and down tempo, synergising with the whole "surreal escapist" theme of the place. And unlike other nightspots, the volume here is not rendered at ear deafening levels so as to encourage conversation. And thats what you mainly get. Its a place you can go to for small talk as well as business discussions over a drink or two.

The service too, is warm and caters to individual needs. For example, bartender Roland Nicolich will make your drink exactly how you like it, even if it means running across the road to get the base mixer. For the ladies, special handbag hooks are installed beneath the concrete bar. It is the little personal touches that together, make it all so convenient and user friendly for patrons to get addicted to.

Although it is located away from the usual pub haunts like Clark Quay or Mohamed Sultan, Michael shares that it was a deliberate attempt on his part to keep it tucked away somewhere less hyped. And this strategy is certainly paying off as patrons make it an event each time they seek out this solace on Club Street.

Bar SaVanh is located at 49 Club Street. Open 5pm till late. Tel: 323-7347
