Working when on a dependant pass

Many expat women arrive in Singapore to accompany their husbands on an expatriate posting.  No bad thing - after all, Singapore is a great place to live.  However, many want to work as well and are not sure where to start.  So, to help clear up this area of confusion, we made some enquiries with the Singapore Immigration Department and came up with the following step by step guide - from arriving here to finding a job.  If you are already a Dependent Pass holder, then please go straight to step 3.

(1)    Go to the Singapore Immigration Department and obtain an application form for a Dependant's pass (if you have not done so
        already.)

(2)    Submit the application with all the necessary documentation and await your pass.

(3)    Once you hold a Dependent Pass, start job-searching!  You may like to refer back to the links here to help you. Otherwise,
there are many jobs websites to help you also: http://www.recruitasia.com, http://www.jobsdb.com.sg.

(4)    Once someone offers you a position, and you are keen and able to take up the posting, you should then go down to the
Singapore Immigration once more and ask for a 'letter of consent' form - allowing a dependent pass holder to work.

(5)    Fill in this form and ask your new employer to fill in the relevant sections as well.  Then post or fax back to the Singapore
Immigration Department and wait 2 or 3 weeks for a letter that gives consent to work.  Once this arrives, you are free to work for
as long as the Dependent Pass is valid.   Before the Dependent Pass expires, it must be immediately re-validated otherwise the
person will not be allowed to work.

I hope this information is helpful!  Give us your feedback on your experiences: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
