Following a theme off the other thread it sounds like the best way to get into Brit universities now is to send your kid to a poor state school and spend money on tuition!  I realise the peer group may pose a problem however. The hardest way to get a place looks like being if you are average or below in a high achieving, selective school even if you get good grades.
This is all a result of too many A grade A levels and the resultant confusion among uni admissions as to which are in fact the best students.
It doesn't really matter whether you believe standards are higher or there is grade inflation (I incline to the latter), the result is this confusion. Although looking at the school's averages to decide whether a particular student there is any good sounds meritocratic, won't it lead to parents who previously went private entering the state system just for the exam years and paying for extra help for their kids?

Advice given from my child's Oxbridge admissions tutors. Aim for very good A levels - they only ask for 3, 4 is enough. Everyone applying will expect to get 3 As or more. They are not looking for 5 or 6 and would prefer to interview a student who has read widely on their subject(s) of interest and shows they can bring an extra level of enthusiasm to the subject rather than someone collecting multiple A level passes. The application sometimes asks for marks at AS, not just grades and some subjects at Russel Group Unis have further aptitude tests eg medicine, vet med, law. I think rather than trying to play the system, it's much safer to do the best you can do. There are a few exceptions which are onboard with social engineering, but they are still in a minority.

What's so great about UK universities? I would rather send our kids to the US, they are much better in many ways!

The US is not better in terms of cost, if you are a UK citizen with 'home status'.
