Hi, a question to parents whose children use or used the pacifier.  My 20 month old for months has been purposely (or not) throwing away his pacifier at various hours in the night and then calling for attention.  Have tried leaving him crying for a certain time, explaining to him to keep hold of it etc etc.

My older child used a pacifier to 3 and would never in a million years use this tactic - he really loved his pacifier.

My 20 month old is very choosy about the type of pacifier ie still uses one brand in a small size and refuses anything else whereas older child would take any brand, any size.

My question is - anybody else gone through this and is it time to remove the pacifier?  I'm thinking if he really treasured it, he wouldn't be throwing it away but then he does demand to have it at various other times during the day (which we are limiting).  Any advice?

Maybe you could limit it to bedtime only so he doesn't have it during the day and then if he continues to throw it out of the cot then it's time to get rid of it. He's probably doing that as he knows you will eventually come in and give it to him thereby achieving the aim of getting you to come to him!

We just took the dummy away from our 14 month old during the day and it is only allowed when in the cot. He sleeps in a gro-bag and I clip it to the inside  so that it just pops up near his mouth - he can always find it and can't pull it off and b/c the ribbon holding it is only about 2 inches long when sticking out the top of the gro-bag to his mouth, it can't choke him.
THis might also be worth a try...
Good luck!

good idea about tying it on with a short ribbon - will try that.  Thanks.
