Just wondering how other families spend the weekends with their kids, especially toddlers ?? We don't have a car and money is an issue so we can't afford to join an expat type club or anything fancy like that. Sometimes seems that there is little to do except mooch round shopping malls which is not exciting for the kids. What do you folks do for fun ? We're longing for simple pleasures like walking in the park or feeding the ducks but since it's so darn hot here even those activities are not an option !

we just had a great time at Pasir Ris Park. The playground is HUGE and you can also rent bikes with child seats. There is a place where they can check out some kampong animals and feed fish. Highly recommended. There's a beach and in the evening you can eat seafood by the water. Get the kids guide to singapore from the New Mom's Support Group. It's got tons of info. I heard Choa Chu Kang pool has fantastic fountains and a wave pool. Will try next week.

trips to the airport (playgrounds and lots of space as well as planes to watch of course)/MRT rides/early morning visits to East Coast Parkway (wears them out before it gets too hot) making sandcastles etc/swimming at the pool/Pasir Ris indoor play area/Pasir Ris theme park - quite a few small rides for toddlers as well as older children.

I bought a useful book a few weeks ago which is packed with ideas for things to do/places to go.  Its called "Fun4Kids in Singapore".  I got mine in Borders but I guess its in most bookshops.

Hi,
My 2.5 y.o. loves going on the bus, train, helping with the food shopping and having a baby chino.  Just being involved in what we are doing.

We go to Pulau Ubin off Changi Pier everynow and then $2 bum boat over, hire a bicycle for an hour (you can hire a toddler trailer for $10), quick lunch and home for sleep.
There's a water taxi from the Indoor stadium for $3 pp which is great as well.

Gum boots and umbrellas in the rain...

Join the local library, let the kids choose their own books and read with them, kills an hour or so.

Hope some of this helps.

Ask for the Pasir Ris NTUC building for the indoor play area if you are going by taxi - there is a taxi rank there and it is easy to find.  There is also a tenpin bowling alley, loads of food stalls/various eating places.  If you walk through the building there is an outdoor swimming pool, and the theme park has a separate entrance just outside (best to ask for much better directions than these at one of the help desks near the taxi rank).  I think the indoor play area opens about 11am - they also have rooms for childrens parties.

The theme park is only open at weekends, actually if you leave the theme park and turn to the left there is a huge outdoor park there as well.

Hi Try These,

Didn't realise that there are playgrounds in the airport.

Where can I find them?

terminal 1 has a playground if you go up to the viewing area and walk right along to the end you will find a Swensen's and right beside it are a couple of climbing frames with slides, there is also another climbing frame beside the foodcourt.

we also do the rounds of the parks in good weather. There is a big park down by the coast - marina city park. you can get a bus to it from Chinatown.  There's a play area there, but there are also statues and sculptures which are quite interesting.  it's very peaceful there as it is a bit out of the way - we managed to buy drinks from the food centre nearby but it would be worth taking your own just in case it isn't open.

Other (free) places to go apart from ones mentioned here are Chinese/Japanese gardens, Botanic gardens, Fort Canning Park, East Coast recreation centre (small play area outside McDonalds), or HDB estates which always have play areas.  McRichie reservoir is quite interesting for kids, and you don't have to walk all around it, you could just stick to the garden area and watch the monkeys and monitor lizards. you can also have a cheap day out at Sentosa, just pay the entry fee and walk around the gardens and go to the beach.

You can also join the zoo for around $80 for a year and then you get free entry.  I don't know where you are from, but where I'm from $80 is about what we'd pay for one visit to a zoo back home, so it was worth doing for us.  I think the bird park has a similar scheme.

Tampines mall has  an Ezone place with a play maze in it, which might not be suitable for a toddler, but something to bear in mind when they get a bit older.

There's a big cluster of playgrounds at west coast park, which caters to kids of all ages, from toddler onwards.

It gets hot there middle of the day, as the play areas are not shaded and it also gets real crowded on the weekends.  But we've been there several times in the early evening/late afternoon and our kids always had fun.

You could try IKEA ball park.  They allow kids to play in their ball park within the complex free for 1 hour and it is airconditioned plus there are staff looking after your child during that time.  All you need to do is fill in a form stating your address and contact number.  Oh..you must also not leave the building during that time and your child has to be min 0.98m tall.  After ball game you can pop into the next room for a cartoon VCD playing all day.  It can kill 2-4 hours easy and all for free.  You can pop into IKEA restaurant for a bite or to Burger King downstairs if you want.   Do this with our son and he always have fun plus shopping is a breeze.

This weekend we took our 2.5 year old (and baby) to the library in the morning - 20 mins walk which helps tire him out and he gets to watch all the trucks and cars go by on the way.  Afternoon play time inside and condo playground in the evening.  Today we went to the zoo.  I can really recommend getting an annual pass - great value and a zoo visit can really fill in a day - lots of animals but it's the playground that he really loves.  Pasir Ris park is fun.  A trip to the market is entertaining for him - lots of cheap little rides - 20c per ride.  Upper and Lower Pierce Reservoirs to see Monkeys and sometimes monitor lizards.  A few weekends ago we went to the local fire station.  They're all open to the public in the weekends - just turn up and you'll get a tour of the facilities and vehicles - interesting for parents as well as for littlies.  We bought a bike with a toddler seat and he goes for rides with his dad to see the monkeys at the reservoir.  There's an indoor playground in the basement at Paragon - not very big but fills in some time and my son enjoys it.  Indoor playground on second floor of Forum Mall ($10 joining fee).  Exploring local playgrounds - heaps around us - just have to watch for mosquitos around some of them.  Making pikelets is a good weekend activity for him - he loves mixing up the ingredients.
