I've just tried to bake a healthy cake, (wholemeal flour, wheat germ etc.) for my son, but it's turned into a disaster.

I'm thinking of resorting to a Betty Crocker cake mix, would this be okay for my baby to try?

I doubt he'll eat loads of cake, but I'd obviously like him to try abit of his own birthday cake.

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

for my sons 1st b'day i made a fairly adult type chocolate cake.  it was pretty much his first taste of junk food and he did ok with a little slice.  as long as there's no raw egg it should be ok.

I bake a lot usually from scratch, but have used Betty to help me out when time is running short.  In my opinion if you are going to make a cake out of a packet, these are the best.  They taste not like a packet cake (White wings - yuk).  Their brownies are very good as well.  They are also well lablled for food allergens.  Good luck!

Thank you both for your help.  I'll go to the shops later on and have a look round.

Banana cake has been the 1st birthday cake for both my kids.  You don't have to put a whole cup of sugar in for it to still taste good.  Both of them had a little taste on the day but weren't interested really. The cake is more for the adults or older kids at the party.

I'm always making banana cake here as the bananas go off so quickly.

I love baking but when things are a diaster I turn to retail purchasing.

'Awfully chocolate' sell cakes & they are the best in Singapore.  I recently bought a chocolate & banana cake for my niece's 2nd birthday.  Everyone devoured it.

I hear they are baked in JB & vans deliver every morning.

There are a few around, the one I buy from is on Bukit Timah road near Cluny Court, just outside the new Cold Storage.
