Hi

Just found out I'm pregnant again and narrowed down my choice to KKH. Can anybody recommend a good gynaec there? By good, I mean somebody who is open to questions, is up-to-date with the latest stuff etc.  Have heard some doctors still practice giving enemas, lying down while giving birth, standard episiotomies etc and am scared I would end up with one of them.

I heard John Tee is good but has long waiting times? Anybody else?

Thanks in advance!

I am currently seeing H K Wee and am very happy with him. (I am 7 months pregnant) He is up to date, mother centred and very easy to talk to. I would happily recomend him to anyone.

I used DR Maryama George, who is also the doctor for a number of girls in my company.  Highly recommend...  also, they offer something called the TPS package - this is VERY good and is not a huge added cost.  It ensures you get YOUR doctor on delivery and not a trainee which can happen there... so even if you go with another doctor, make sure that will be the one you get on delivery day..

Unfortunately all the things you mention (enemas, lying down while giving birth, standard episiotomies etc) are standard practise with most OB's and most hospitals in Singapore.  Some of the more open/flexible OB's have been mentioned before on this list - so far not come across any at KK but I'm sure they are out there !

It's very diccult to go on other people's recommendations for an OB as everyone's preferences and expectations regarding childbirth are so different - it's a very personal matter, some women are very happy for their OB to take the lead and will basically agree to  whatever the OB tells them is necessary, others prefer to be more of an equal partner and find an OB who is willing to discuss options and choices with them.

This is all important stuff to talk about and clarify with them - and the best time to do it is long before the birth ! (I'm sure you know this already) Be careful with how you ask questions - if you say "do you routinely cut episiotomies" they would usually say no; better to say "in what percentage of your clients do you find it necessary to cut an episiotomy?" and probe about exactly when and why they might do one; also  try and get them to be specific about things like positions for delivery etc. If you get any sense at all they are being evasive or fobbing you off, change doctors.

I believe the choice of doctor is MUCH more important than the choice of hospital, as the nurses will follow whatever instructions they have received from the OB - if you arrive and say you don't want continuous monitoring, for example, and that's something you haven't previously discussed and agreed with your OB, then you have little chance of getting them to agree - but if it's all in black and white in your birth plan (signed off by the OB) then they will generally comply.

Good luck and if you find a good one please post to this board !

with Binks.  I saw Dr. Mariamma George at KK and was quite pleased with her.  I found that she was a very good listener, and was very open to both my input and my questions.  I also found that she was very supportive when things were not going well.  She seemed very up to date with her knowledge, and all in all I was impressed with her.  Of course there was the downfall that she always seemed to be late with her appointments,  but I think this is pretty much standard across the board.  Good luck, I hope you find the Doctor you are looking for.

Hi all!

Thanks for the input. Really helpful. I went to see Dr. S. T Beh, coz he sees patients at his AMK clinic where he has his own ultrasound machine. It is nearer to where I live and I had heard I would have to wait for hours at the counter at KKH and be shunted around for an ultrasound. Anyway, I still ended up waiting for nearly 2 hrs as he had been called away for an emergency delivery! All this for a 10 min quick session with a scan. I had to really probe to find out what he was seeing on the ultrasound. He could have shared!! Hmmm... with my first (this was in CA), my first appointment lasted nearly half-an hour, with the doctor talking about the pregnancy, what to expect, what to do, etc...

I chose KKH b'coz I hav heard that the private hospitals are quick to pick the option of c-sections for ridiculous reasons and that I would do better going in for A-class at KKH.  (I'm not a doctor, so I don't know how far that is true...just that it scared me off the private hospitals).

As for the fee structure, my friend went in for a consultation at KK and just pain $20, while I paid like $65 (and I hold a PR!). Why the huge difference?

Badly confused about this whole giving-birth-in-singapore thing!
