We will be traveling on a long flight with baby in a flat, airplane bassinet.   Our  11 week old baby has fairly bad reflux.  She must be elevated and still she spits up constantly.
Any ideas/suggestions as to what I can put in the bassinet to elevate her while she is awake and on her back (she sleeps on her side in a sleep positioner)?

It depends on the airline but BA offers two kinds of bassinets. The regular kind and the kind that looks like a car seat which can be upright or reclined to an angle - not horizontal.  That might be your best bet as your baby will be elevated all the time.  Ours loved sleeping in them as they have a slight hammock effect!

Only problem is making sure they have them on board.  You can reserve one when you book but when you check in  you need to insist that they check that one is on board your flight as they don't always carry them.  Then when you board you need to check again with the head flight attendant and reserve it.  It goes in teh same place as the regular bassinet and your baby is strapped in like a car seat which to my mind is safer than a bassinet anyway.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the posting.  Am struggling with a reflux infant myself. Ours sleeps on an inclined wedge at home -- and I didn't think about the plane.

Perhaps you try to reduce the amount of milk given at one feeding.  Some babies may be unable to take the recommended milk quantity shown on the milk tin.

Alternatively, try out anti-reflux milk powders like NAN AR. Why not try it?

Good luck!

Can't begin to tell you how surpirsed I was to see someone jump to the conclussion that your child is formula fed?!!  I had three children ALL with severe reflux & breastfed each of them until well into the second year.  For the record formula makes NO difference to a reflux baby vomiting - infact it makes it smell worse!  Whatever you do, DO NOT restrict your childs fluid intake before or during the flight (if anything increase it) as flying is very dehydrating and refluxers are more prone to dehydration than non-refluxers anyway.

Now back to the topic.  Ours were all extensively travelled & unfortuntately just like at home, there is little you can do on an airplane to prevent the vomiting.  Just be prepared with plenty of quick drying muslin cloths to mop up the spills & wet wipes.  I always sat mine on my lap when the seat belt sign was off & they weren't asleep.  That said they all tended to sleep much better (including the two that vomited from feed to feed for 12 months!!) whenever we flew.  A rolled up towel or an airline pillow under the bassinette insert will help with elevation of a flat bottomed sleeper.

Good luck - it won't be as bad as you are anticipating!
