Ok, so it's not necessarily a bad thing - no periods so far for 8 months after my baby was born but now that I'm starting to think about baby #2 I'm a bit puzzled about how and if it's gonna happen. Is it possible to be ovulating without having periods? I read that it can take up to 18 months to start up again in some women. Have others had a similar experience?

Didn't restart until just over a year after the birth. Restarted when feeds dropped off to one a day. Yes, you will probably ovulate before your periods start again and it is possible to get pregnant.

I got mine at 14 months and am still breastfeeding. You ovulate once before you get your period. Not sure if it's possible to ovulate and not get your period, can't really see how, unless you get pregnant of course.

Haven't had mine for 5 years! Got pregnant with the 2nd while still breastfeeding my eldest. But it was reverse or night nursing. I'd nurse him only when I was home in the evenings or on week-ends. I'd stopped expressing at work when my eldest was about 13 mths old. My 2nd son is turning 2 in April. Not sure how we'd get No.3 but quite happy not to have periods ;-)

I didnt have a period while breastfeeding my first - and conceived my second when I started to cut down breastfeeding without ever having a period. Didnt have a period after the 2nd until I stopped breastfeeding him too.

Ovulation always come before the period, (approx. 14 days) so yes, it is possible.

This doesn't really answer the OP's question, but just to reinforce the fact that all women are different, and react differently at different times, here's what happened to me: baby #1 - period returned at week 12, baby #2 - 14 months, baby #3 - 4 months. Go figure. I exclusively bfed all three and the first two didn't sleep for more than 4 hours at a stretch until they were nearly 12 months old.

I got pregnant with no 2 when no 1 was 13 months old, I was still breastfeeding (but not much) and had not had a period yet. So yes, you can ovulate!

It's not a maybe thing. You ovulate before you get your period. Your period marks the end of your cycle, not the beginning.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but i have a question in regards to getting a period after giving birth. Since the birth of my first child, I have now got my period (for three months now) but have noticed that it is much different than previously (ie. used to be quite light and 3-5 days, now heavy and approx 7 days). As a bonus I seem to be no longer suffering from the period pain that I used to? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I am sure it is probably nothing to worry about, but curious to find out what others think?

My cycles are totally different now too. Before having a baby they were irregular and light but painful with awful cramps. Now they are coming every 28 days, I have heavier bleeing but no cramping. I like it this way.
