I had to stop breast feeding completely at 12 months in order to get period back (we're trying for #2).

I think the rule of thumb is that your periods can often be quite different after having a baby.  For me, the first one (at 6 months postpartum, right after I cut back a bit on exclusive breastfeeding) was light but extremely painful, but now the pain has subsided.
