Are you tall?  The beds are really short at NUH.  My friend delivered there and she's 6 foot and her feet stuck off the end of the bed by a couple of inches.  Not very comfortable.

I had my baby at NUH (c-sec)and I was very impressed. It cost around 7k incl epidural, nursery cost etc etc.The rooms were great (certainly better than Mt.E, KK or East Shore).Good doctors, very efficient nursing staff, good service-can't praise them enough.

By the way, you can call the hospital and find out the package deals. There is also a hospital tour where they take you to the nursery, labour ward, rooms and explain admission and emergency procedures.
Dont know if the tour is still on after the SARS episode though.

I was under the care of NUH and  had an IUD at 18 weeks in Feb 2003. (The care I received from the gynaecologist during my first 18 weeks of pregnancy was excellent).  I was was admitted immediately in order to be induced so that I could give birth to my dead baby.

My husband stayed for the afternoon and evening and went home at midnight to get some sleep.  He was due to return at 6am the following morning.

I was administered 400mg of Ibuprofen at 2 - 3.5  hourly intervals throughout most of the labour.  The pain became unbearable in the early hours of the morning and I requested something stronger.  The nurse asked if I could wait 2 hours, I told he I couldn't.  She didn't return for 2 hours with another dose of 400mg Ibuprofen.  (This is the dose I take for period pains). The pain was so unbearable I was screaming in agony; no one came to attend to me.  When my husband arrived at 6am he could hear me screaming as he got out of the lift, there was still no nurse attending to me.  I again asked for something stronger and was made to wait 30 mins for a pethidine injection and gave birth about an hour later.

The response time when I rang for the nurse during the early hours of the morning was around 20 mins.  I was  scolded for asking for a bedpan when I'd used one recently (I told the nurse at this point that it took such a long time for her to respond that I was making sure there was one there for when I needed it).

I had asked to hold my baby after he was born so that I could say 'goodbye' to him and get some kind of closure.  After he was delivered (with no nursing staff present) he was not brought back to me.

I'm sure that some women have had very positive experiences and good duty of care at NUH.  However, I am sharing this as I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what I went through at NUH. I understand that it was a busy night as I was initially offered a room next to the nursery and declined to take it, but don't think this is a valid excuse for the treatment I received.

What a horrible treatment to be meted out to a human being in pain: both mental and physical.

You should write to the hospital management and demand an explanation. If not for yourself, at least so that they can train their doctors and nurses to treat people more humanely and give them the care care that they are BEING PAID to give.

We wrote to them on 1 April and I finally received a letter on 19 July.  The letter empathises with us for our loss says it hopes I am better now and that the matter has been investigated. There was some misperception about the degree of pain I was experiencing and had they known it was unbearable the drugs would have been changed.  Of course this is ridiculous as I requested  proper pain relief and was denied it AND they couldn't possilby not have heard me screaming and ignored me.

They also state that they offered to show us the baby and we both declined which again, is untrue.  I didn't just want to see him, I wanted to hold him.

Are there any health professionals out there who could adivse me if it's normal practice to administer Ibuprofen.  I've heard that when a woman is induced the pain is more intense.

I feel very angry and disatisfied with the respose I received.

You should send a copy of the letter to the New Paper. Give these ppl something to write about.

It must be so frustrating for you.

I just wanted to say how sorry I was to read your posting. You have been treated very badly at a time when you and your husband needed extra special care.
My family has suffered the still births of two full term babies and in both cases the parents were able to spend precious time with the babies to say goodbye.
In the Uk there is a stillbirths and miscarriage association who were able to provide support and counselling at the time. I don't know if you were able to access any support like that here.
I would certainly continue your complaints, this is a terrible experience which no grieving parents should have to deal with and the hospital should consider carefully their procedeures in these situations. In these days of advanced medical porcedures we forget that pregnancyand childbirth is not always a foregone conclusion of a happy ending.
All the best for the future, I hope you will be able to experience the joy of a newborn baby at some point soon.

NUH is a great hospital.  It is a teaching hospital and so there is always lots of collaboration between doctors which I find comforting.  The Delivery rooms at NUH are new, designed I believe by Dr Mary Rauff who is a greta OB/Gyn.

I had Mary Rauff for my 1st pregnancy and believe me - she is far from fantastic.  Since seeing others I now realise that.
That's just my humble opinion though - you've got to go with who you're happy with and everyone has a different opinion.
