I used to smoke and have given up since starting to try for a baby. But I have lapsed I had 1 last week and 2 this week... Not good and I know about how bad smoking is for you etc etc. But im worried this will prevent me getting pregnant? Then again some people seem to smoke and drink right up until they are pregnant and seem to be fine??

Hi There,

Don't worry about the smoking now, at least you are giving it a go. I doubt highly that it affects your chances of getting pregnant..... i smoked quite a lot before i got pregnant, in fact, i smoked until i was about 2 months pregnant. I didn't realise i was pregnant at around 6 weeks as i had irregular periods, so i went out with my hubby and got completely WASTED and when i drink i always chain smoke so i smoked about 30 cigarettes. The next day i woke up and was throwing up all morning, i thought it must have been a terrible hangover because i was fine the day after that. When i eventually found out i was pregnant, i was absolutely petrified that that night had affected the baby. The doctor told me not to worry about it cos he said he hears it all the time but it's hard to put out of your mind. My son was born healthy with all ten fingers and toes. Try to cut down just so that when you finally are pregnant it won't be that hard to quit completely. I can tell you from experience that it is fairly easy to quit when you're already pregnant the guilt you feel when u light up is not worth it. So if you need a cigarette now, don't panic, at least you've cut down a lot. One or two a WEEK is great, keep at it and best of luck with getting pregnant and then you'll NEED to quit!!

Oh just a bit of advice.... don't pick up the smokes when you've delivered!! I did, the day after i delivered and i regret it soooooooooooo much now. I guess i'll just have to wait until i have baby 2 to motivate me to quit and STAY OFF THESE BLOODY THINGS!!!

Pick up a book by Alan Carr.  It is titled, "The Easy Way To Stop Smoking".

I smoked 40 a day for a decade and quit fairly easily after reading the book, as did my wife and several friends.

Highly recomended.

Don't worry, in the early stages it's pretty much well protected from anything you can do to it.  The human body is amazing and makes sure that if you don't your pregnant that the little embryo will be OK.

It too partied until I found out, and also ended up going on holiday and getting bad bad food poisening.  I ended up self prescribing a whole bunch of stuff that isn't suitable.  But as I said above, the body figures it out and now my baby is fine.

I think most problems occur that if you keep doing the smoking and drinking after the first 6 weeks.

I also quit smoking using the Alan Carr book - I know it sounds strange that reading a book can do this, but it worked for me too.  It made it pretty easy to quit and I don't miss smoking at all.
