A friend of mine from the UK is 5 weeks pregnant. She has had some bleeding and was sent for an emergency scan. The scan showed there was a sac but the doctors could not see whether there was anything inside the sac (basically they couldn't tell her either way if she was still pregnant).

She has to go back in two weeks to have another scan. The doctors have told her it is pointless doing more pregnancy tests as they will show up a positive test regardless.

Has anybody been in the same/similar situation. She just feels completely lost so I said I would ask you all for any info.

How bad is the bleeding? Is there any blood clots? Did they do a vaginal scan? (A vaginal scan is generally clearer)

She has had two days of bleeding. Both times it was not "fresh" blood and there were no clots. They did do a vaginal scan too, but again this was unable to show anything. I wonder if the foetus is so small it may not be able to be picked up.

I am 15 weeks. I have had spotting since week 6. This is my second pregnancy - in the first pregnancy I had spotting at 6 weeks - treated with hormones - and that was it. I had a scan at 5 weeks to see if I was pregnant (quite routine here). There was a sac, but the embryo was too small to be seen at that stage. Seems like that is what your friend saw, and I believe that that is quite normal. You can't see a heartbeat until 7-8 weeks and that is what she will have to hang out for. If the bleeding is quite light and brownish, then it possibly is hormone related bleeding. I am still on progesterone hormones  - as soon as the tablets are finished the spotting comes back again. As soon as I recommence the dosage it stops. I have had scans every 1-2 weeks so far, and the baby is progressing well - last week was 8cm long, and I could see a lovely strong backbone, fingers etc! So, hopefully your friend's bleeding is hormone deficiency, and everything will be alright.

I also bled at 6 weeks and the scan did not pick the heartbeat as fetus was too small. I had to take hormons and the week after a very healthy heartbeat was detected.
The fact that the sack is visible in the uterus is good news as bleeding at this stage could be the sign of an ectopic pregnancy.
Good luck to your friend!

Thanks again
