Yep you're right. The first day you miss your period is when you can test. However - if it comes negative don't worry. It takes a while for the pregnancy hormones to build up enough to show on the test. Wait a couple of days and try the test again ( or be like me and do two tests a day until something happens.) The tests at the Dr's are a bit more accurate than the over the counter things, but you should at least wait a couple of days from when your period is due and try a pharmacy test before heading off to the Doc. Fingers crossed for you

I used Clear & Blue and tested positive a week before my period was due. Although the blue line was quite weak initially, however it got darker later on... Good luck!

As the previous poster said, don't give up if it comes out negative. Mine kept coming out negative for 2 weeks after my period was due until eventually I went to the doc where it very faintly showed positive - due date now 2 weeks later than I thought it should be. Good luck, I know what a stressful time it is.

Urine tests done for pregnancy are testing HcG levels and every woman has different levels therefore some may be more sensitive (showing positive before their period due date) than others. Some women may not show positive for 1 week after their period due date. The over the counter products are pretty accurate these days but although they say you can test at any time of the day, it is better to test with the first morning urine sample as this is when a woman's HcG levels are at their highest. Good luck

I tested the day before my period was due as I couldn't wait that extra day! Like one of the previous posters, I got a very, very feint blue line. I tested again on the day my period was due and it was much darker and more obvious Good luck

Awww, thanks for all the messages of luck. REALLY appreciate them. Now you may all think I'm mad, but its been 12 days since possible conception. I have had for the past five days cramps in my groin and a funny feeling in my tummy, almost like butterflies, like I'm nervous. Try to forget them in case they are pyschosamatic (spelling?!!) but then they're still there. Feel queasy too. I know its all far far too early for this to be morning sickness etc etc etc but.............................................! Any advice apart from the funny farm??!!! Thanks a lot x

good luck wishful, I hope it turns out well for you. If it doesn't happen this time, I know it's easy to say (and loads of people said it to us) you really should try to not think about getting pregnant or stressing out about it happening... but maybe it already has. all the best

Dear Wishful Don't disregard wierd symptoms and gut feelings - they can be pretty accurate. The first time I got pregnant I swear I knew the day after conception. I woke up in the morning and thought "I feel pregnant", and I smelt pregnant too !! And I was. Good luck honey - having children is simply the greatest thing. xx

Found the clear and blue test was the most sensitive - my cycle is really irregular so I was just testing before each weekend in case I wanted to drink. Lo and behold, a v. faint blue line appeared which was a nice firm line when I tested two days later. I had felt odd that week, but had period type cramps so hadn't thought anything of it - was expecting period to have started everytime I went to the toilet. Apparently though minor cramps are quite common in early pregnancy as the uterus is sorting itself out. Good luck!

Wishful - these tests are all based on a hormone your body produces when your pregnant. I starts off very slowly hence why some people wait one week, two weeks for a positive result. My advice is chill out!! Check yourself again in a few days. I made myself crazy testing every day and wasted heaps of cash on tests. The test didn't come positive until I was at least two weeks late.

Wishful. If in doubt, test again in 24 hours. If still in doubt, head to the doctors as they can give you a blood test which is more accurate. If it is a strong vertical line you are seeing, rather than horizontal, then that is positive. Most tests have a 'control' line in a separate window which must also come up to validate the test. Also make sure you are reading it straight away - any line that develops after 10 minutes doesn't count. Fingers crossed though. A negative result might mean that you are testing too early. However, apparently false positives are really rare with these things so if you have the approprate line, faint, strong or otherwise, that usually means you are pregnant for sure.
