I'm a bit concerned about the safety of my kids if we get an apartment with a balcony.  My hubby's seen a nice apartment with about 4 balconies, but it's on the 19th floor (great view, but very high up!) - are there any safety precautions you can take?

I know people who have put grilles up coverinig the entire balcony.  not too expensive (a friend paid $200 to grille off a large balcony, but this was some years ago)

A friend of mine had the landlord put up clear plastic panels over the balcony grilles. Her kids couldn't get a foothold then, if they did manage to get on the balcony which she prevented with keeping the doors closed and locked.  The clear plastic sure looked a lot better than some of these metal bars you see.

Good luck.
