Yay! I have just found out I'm pregnant with my 3rd child. The first two were emergency c-sections and this time I'm definitely going for an elective caesar. There are lots of posts about the best doctors and hospitals for natural births, but what about for c-sections? Since the risks of complications to the baby are in fact higher with c-section, I'm wondering whether Gleneagles, Mt E and TMC offer neonatal intensive care units, or if I should just go to KK. I am insured so cost is not the concern. Also seeking advice about the standard of postnatal care for c-sections as the past two have been very painful and it's really important that someone will go to a crying baby quickly when I'm too sore! Advice please?

TC Chang did my elective c section.  It was less than 5 months ago and the scar is as faint as it was two years after my emergency C.  He is highly recommended by those wanting natural and interventionist births as he is hugely supportive of your choices and birth plan.  He made me write my birthplan well in advance for both VBAC and C as I wasn't sure what I wanted and then we went through it all together.  I can't speak highly enough of him and I believe he is considered one of the best.

I'm not sure you're correct about babies being at higher risk during an elective C section.  It's actually calmer and safer for the baby - just more risk for you in terms of haemorraging and surgical error.  If you're worried, have a paed on standby but i think other than in the US, this is pretty unusual.

I had 2 emergency C's, that last one with TC Chang (the first was in the US). He is EXCELLENT. The above poster is spot on - he cares about the patient, loves birth plans, and is a very warm, friendly guy ... exactly the sort of OB you want in the operating room. I delivered at Mt E with TC Chang, and Dr Belinda as the paed for my newborn. TC delivers at TMC (where his offices are), Mt E and Gleneagles. Just tell him which hospital you prefer. Coincidentally my newborn in Singapore was in the NICU for 2 weeks after the emergency C (no complications related to the birth, she was just preemie by 6 weeks) and the Mt E NICU is second to none - babies from other hospitals are routinely sent to MT E because it is the best one in Singapore, and the staff/medical facilities are outstanding.

I was in your situation about 1.5 years ago when pregnant with my second (and jsut arrived in Singapore) and I decided on an elective C just like you (which ended up being another emergency C anyway!) and I found the choices I made (above) re the doctor and hospital I chose were first rate (and I'm fussy). I have no regrets whatsoever.  Good luck.

I would recommend Prof P C Wong at NAtional University Hospital. AS it is the teaching hospital it also has an excellent NICU and the like. He did my EMCS and also delviered my sisters twins by Caesar and is fantastic

You will usually have a nominated paediatrician for a birth here anyway regardless of the circumstances.

You only need to consider KK if there is a high risk of complications and you have an issue with the cost of a long stay in somewhere like Mount E.

Two sections with TC Chang - because of me, not him.  Can barely see the scars and I was at gym class with my 2 year old a week after my 2nd section.  A brilliant surgeon.  FRCS not just an OB who can cut.  Makes a big difference.

How is Chang with fertility issues? Does he get involved with that as well?  I'd been going to Foong however I don't know if he's as accepting of c-sections, does anyone know?

Thanks everyone, I have made an appt to see Dr Chang. It's interesting that so many of you mentioned the scar. I had a big nasty keloid scar the first time, and none the second so I'm keen to have a thin scar too if possible.
