Whilst the baby was strapped in we were allowed to keep him in there - this has been on more than one flight.  I admit this wasn't wild 'jump you out of your seat' type turbulence, but enough to tell people to sit down and put seat belts on.

With small children who haven't been sitting up long, the reins work well in that if you tether one side to one end of the basinet and the other to the other then it basically keeps them sitting upright safely.  It also helps on long flights if you think you're ALL going to go to sleep (some hopes!) - obviously let the baby have enough slack to lie down! - that you don't have to worry that whilst you're reclining, dozing, the baby might wake up, sit up and topple out.

I used the reins purely because on one flight my little boy suddenly pushed himself up (having only done it at home about twice before) and did a head-first forward somersault into my husband's lap luckily much to the amazement of everyone in the loo for the toilets queuing past our seats.  After that we always used the reins for our peace of mind and it worked well.

Thanks Post-its. We are soon doing a flight to London with my 10 mth old and I was dreading  him just going to sleep and then having to get him out of the bassinet b/c of turbulence and wake him up. He can't sit up on his own from lying down so I think we should be ok with just putting the rein on when he is lying down.
I just didn't know the airlines allowed you to leave them in there if they were strapped in so thanks so much for this info.

Hi Post-Its,

Could you tell me where you buy the reins here in Singapore?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I doubt SQ will let you leave the baby in the bassinet if s/he is strapped in. Their issue with the bassinet and turbulence is that it is possible for the bassinet to pop out of the wall. On Sq the baby is effectively strapped in anyway.

That said, I always talk to the staff to tell them that I know the recommendations for taking the baby out when seat belt sign is on and that if it's not heavy turblence I prefer to leave him in there and I take full responsibility for that. They've always let me.

Re read your posts.  You are willing to compromise the safety of your most prescious possession to save the price of a seat?

Buy a seat and put your precious cargo in a car seat!

I would be ashamed to have written that!

YOU cannot possibly know if the turbulence is heavy or not.  This is akin to putting your own seat belt on in the car and leaving your baby loose on the back seat!

We bought ours at John Little, but it was a few years ago now.  Ours were rainbow striped, and the boys liked the colours!

I'm sure somewhere like Kiddie Palace would have them.  Or maybe try Mothercare?

And to 'People People" I think you're being a little alarmist here.  Seeing how hard the stewards have to bash down on the basinets to affix them to the wall - and frequently how hard it is to get them off again towards the end of a flight - I would be absolutely amazed if the thing bounced off in turbulence.

Well, lets hope you're not "amazed" one day then!
