Switching from Formula to Milk

Hi, Can anyone recommend:
-At what age should one switch from Formula to Milk?
-Which type of Milk ( or "Brand") would be most appropriate?

I was told by my pead that you can change over at 12 months.  he also recommended that i only use full cream milk. Some people keep their children on formula for longer, i really think its a personal choice!
