I'm new to Singapore and have one child (18 mths) who was born with Down Syndrome.  We're seriously thinking about having another one now that we're settled here and I was wondering if anyone else in Singapore has gone through genetic testing ie. CVS or Amnio.  I know the differences between the testing, just would like advice on any recommendations with doctors, hospitals, etc.  Can I have an elective C-section in Singapore?  Also, should I see an Ob/Gynae prior to becoming pregnant?  Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any ob-gynae will offer you any test that you require. CVS is still quite new here but Gleneagles & Mount Elizabeth definitely do it.

Someone will probably moan at me for saying this but most Singaporeans tend to err on the side of caution so a large number will go for amnio etc. even when the risk is not particularly high.  This is partly due to the fact that the care for children with any kind of handicap is not as widely available as elsewhere & many families cannot afford it nor do they want to bring up a child that will never properly fit into Singapore society as it is.

Elective c-sections are also relatively common here.

I would recommend starting to look for a doctor sooner rather than later so that you can find someone you are comfortable with & has time to address your issues. Many of the doctors here will only allocate you 5-10 mins per appointment so be warned!
