Hi, I have just moved to Singapore and am looking for a school to start right way, for my son who is 2 years old. I live in Kew Drive and am looking for a school that would not be more than a half-an- hour taxi drive (non peak hour). Since he is used to a proper school while we were in HongKong; would prefer a school rather than just informal play groups. I have looked at a couple of schools close by and was impressed only with Eton House which unfortunately is full. Any help or advice welcome. Thank you very much

You want to send your 2 year old to school?  Don't you think that may be just a teeny bit young?!

Why on earth would someone send their child to "proper" school at 2???   Let your child enjoy playing, you can never get that time back again.

Don't get me wrong guys! My son was attending a Montessori school in HongKong where I had to be present as well. Both of us enjoyed it so much. His class/grade was called "play group" and next step would have been nursery (without an adult's presence). It is this next step that I am looking for in a school here which would enable his transformation to an international school easier when he is 3. And ofcourse, am looking for one that teaches through play like Montessori curriculum and am NOT looking for a regimented school. Moreover, I think the time has come, when my son needs to spend atleat three hours away from me (I don't have a maid). I need the break as well badly! Can I have some helpful and understanding replies please. Thankyou

Which branch of EtonHouse did you go to? There are two near where you're staying -- the main branch is on Broadrick, and there's a smaller branch on Seraya Lane. You might try checking if Seraya Lane still has a slot for your kid.

My daughter started at Shaw's Child Development and Learning Centre in Goodman Road, very near Eton House, when she was 18 months old.  (She is now 2 and a bit).  It is a super little 'school'; only a few expat kids, but we're all very pleased with it.    Tel No: 6440 7813.

For those of you who seem anxious that someone would consider sending a two year old to school rest assured that the child is not doing the 3 r's at that point.  Nor is there any homework (incase you were wondering).  The children learn to socialise.  They are shown how to share, take turns, wait their turn and so on.  The learning that takes place in the home...such as toilet training and good table habits is reinforced at school and often the child is provided with stimulus in a school setting that cannot be provided for at home.  ie a huge sandplay area or educational equipment and toys.  The children's learning if fun and interactive and is a prelude to what they will do in the older classes.  Often the children and the parents benefit from the additional motivation that the child receives in such a setting.  Of course the most important factor is that both the child and the parent are ready...

Good on you Mum!

EtonHouse Newton is having an open day tomorrow and registration is waivered if you register on the day.  Please give me a call there if you would like to discuss the centre further.  I'm the Pre-school Director there and I'll be happy to speak with you.

All the best whatever you decide.

I have a 2 yo also looking for a play group. Can anyone suggest any establishment near Holland Village or Science park II?  I am comfortable with an environment where there are a mixture of expat and local kids.
