Hey Maidless Also,
You mentioned being interested in meeting with an expat who is maidless and with a child?  Where are you? I'm on Upper Bukit Timah.

"It is the norm for Singaporeans to have maids as the govt allows this. They are generally not the 'norm' in our home country."

Really?  Most Singaporeans have maids?

You could look at this question in a different light. I have lived here for a number of years now - but still remember how a lot of things seemed quite wierd when I moved here - especially the maid thing coming from the UK where I never had the option not to clean my own toilet.

I often take the role at our workplace of helping new expats settle in - new women employees and wives of the male employees. I always ask them if they are thinking of getting a maid - to give them a chance to raise any questions and debunk some myths. If you are a working women they can be the right solution for many women here and many women who are full time childcarers also see many benefits. Many women know that there is a lot of bad press about the maid issue and if they have good experiences want to share them.

I guess it all depends on how the question is phrased - but as you are new here this is one of those things that is different in life here and it is those different things which become natural topics of conversation when someone has just arrived  - and it is probably well meant, even if it is not the way you want to do it.
