Just arrived and just found out pregnant for second time. We live just over the road from Gleneagles, so I suppose it would be silly not to use. I need an OB that is definitely pro on active births, and not alarmist in anyway. Second time is so less frightening! We have no insurance cover, but also don't want to skimp on care. Are there any western oB's there?

I am also wondering about the same.  We have health insurance but it doesn't cover maternity and it is possible that we might have another baby in the near future.  Is there a difference in the level of care of mother and baby if you do not have health insurance?  The main women and children hospitals that I have heard of are Thompson and KK.  They seem to be the most recommended, but are they any good?

Just because an OB is Western does not mean they will be pro-natural births. In fact I am not aware of any OB's at Gleneagles who would meet that criteria although I am happy to be corrected of anyone knows otherwise !

If you want a low intervention birth then you'd be better off looking for an OB who meets that need first of all - most OB's can practise at any hospital. Having said that, the way that the nurses work will make a big difference to your birth since they will be the ones who actually care for you during your labour - and as far as I am aware Gleneagles is not generally known as a low intevention hospital.  NUH or Thomson Medical Centre would be, depending on which OB you have.

I'm not aware of the standard of care varying according to whether you are insured or not. But they will tend to assume that western expats (if indeed that is what you are!) are insured up to the hilt - so if you are paying for it yourself, watch out as they charge for everything ! And I mean everything - fetal monitoring, pads, lates gloves, dressings, use of the shower, they even charge you for doing vaginal exams ! Worth checking over the bill very closely before you pay it.

I would never recommend Gleneagles.  Personally I found the staff very rude and matter of fact.  When I was recovering I overheard one of the nurses saying 'does she realise this is not a hotel?'.

This is NOT the sort of conversation you want to over-hear, especially when you are without a partner to help you out.

I will continue to slate their name to anyone who should mention the word 'hospital'.

I delivered my child at Gleneagles and my experience was not bad.    Actually my doctor was great and staying the hospital was comfortable.   Only thing what I was bothered, was some of the nurse's comment
"You like that doctor?  But they're
  doing this ONLY FOR MONEY".
" Everybody has lots of visiter but
  you have very little, looks
  very lonely.   How come?"

I know you'd prefer Gleneagles, but may I say that personally, I found Raffles Hospital's maternity ward extremely impressive. The staff were attentive, caring, and the doctors were willing to listen and explain everything you would need to know. A tad costly though.

I had my second child at Gleneagles and had a good experience.  The nurses were all pleasant and helpful - I had to stay in for a week due to complications and I have no complaints about my stay there.
