Does anyone know what is the recommended daily dosage in pre-conception? Is 5mg too much?

Forgot to say that I've just checked my books and the RDA is 400mg, although it's slightly difficult to reach this level through a normal diet, orange juice and green leafy vegetables can also help.

If you are trying, I suggest you get some prenatel vitimins, I used normal ones though, GNC for women which contains half the RDA.

Hmmm - 400mg? ARe you sure about that?

This is my third pregnancy and I have taken 5mg on each occasion.   Once into the 2nd trimester you can knock it down to the 1mg which is standard in most of the pregancy multi-vitamins.

By all means check with your Doctor though for your own piece of mind.

Oh I should say that my first child was born with a birth defect and I was advised to take the 5mg folic acid with subsequent pregnancies.

at the thread in regards to this topic that was discssed just last week.  It was pretty much agreed that 400mg is the world standard, however, here in Singapore most Doctors are still prescribing 5mg.  It is not harmful for you or your baby to take the higher dose, it is simply unnecessary.

I think "Sam I am" means 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid - not 400mg. (This amount is also written as 0.4 milligrams (mg).

This is significantly less than 5 mg.

I 'Have a look' also incorrectly wrote 400mg.  I meant 400mcg.  Sorry about that.
