The things you own, they end upowning you.

I don't want to die without anyscars.

Two interesting remarks in this out of the ordinary film.  I know the film is a few years old now - but I just wanted to continue a coversation I was having in Melbourne with a group of friends

Is this film brilliant or an absolute disaster ?  Most male friends love it - personally I almost stood in my chair cheering and wanted to punch the guy next to me just for the fun of it.  Only one of my female friends likes it - the rest think that its terrible and horribly violent.

Any thoughts?

Watched the movie on a day with nothing better to do, and was surprised at how good it was.  Great ride from start to finish, seldom do you come across shows that make you grip the edge of your seat while waiting for the truth to be revealed only to be tossed from one twist of the plot to another.
It's also amazing how much beating the human body can take, guess there's a little masochist hidden in every one of us!

Only gripe--Brad Pitt is an actor i'd love to hate!

i have seen the movie at the express advice of a lady friend and i hated it. i found the violence to be totally gratuitous and repelling.

mind you: i am a total action movie and horror movie fan (i just adore the Hellraiser series) so i'm not someone that is against or squeemish where it concerns violent movies. this one i found totally out of line.

another strange thing: the lady friend who recommended it to me is not a great fan of action/violent movies...

is there some sort of connection?

I see the violence in Fight Club as simply a vehicle for expressing modernities inability to cope with masculinity - the same concept could be used with drugs, religion or whatever - working all our lives to buy things we never needed doesnt make us complete as people.

My only gripe with the film was that it was made in hollywood using 2 extremely popular actors - so its message is somewhat nulled by the notion that the society it fort against is a society personified by the likes of Brad Pitt.  Even still as I said I loved the film

Wow! - FC is a truely awesome movie... David Fincher has achieved something tremendous with this flick. To quote the producer, Art Linson, "it's not a question of violence. Last I checked I think one person in Fight Club died. You see more violence in the first 10 minutes of Saving Private Ryan than if you watched Fight Club for an entire year. But it defies the expectations tha audiences have about the context that they see violence in."

The writer of the original book, Chuck Palahniuk says: "Almost all of the book was based on stories that my friends told me and stunts that we pulled together. The rest was just a matter of looking for the themes, the topics that brought people together in excited conversation."

The plot development and twists are striking, memorable and shocking, the relationship between Tyler and Marla is part fantasy and part nightmare, the direction is amazing, and the message is Zen-simple: Don't let yourself be ruled by material posessions, by fear, by the system. Change youself and the world, for no better reason than to avoid stagnation. Or as Tyler puts it, "I say evolve, and let the chips fall where they may".
