Superstitions .... do they still exist?

Saw a black cat the other day and remembered the old wives tales about cats crossing your path.

What are you superstitious about?

Some people might argue that religion is a superstition.

But of course other superstitions are about. You noticed in the States there's no 13th floor in the buildings?

In Chinese culture the number 8 is lucky?

Some superstitions come from good sense (eg don't walk under a ladder, as something from the ladder or the ladder itself might drop on you!)

Others are just nonsense (when you spilt salt you threw some over your shoulder to keep the devil away)

Do I beleive in them? Not really.

Have you heard the Chinese superstition of how one should not point at the moon ?  Apparently, your ear will get cut at the bottom lobe closest to your face.

This may sound ridiculous, but when I was a young girl, I pointed to the moon and the very next day, woke up with a sharp pain at my right ear.  There was a cut at my ear lobe, just as the superstition said.

Superstition or pure coincidence, you decide.

Popular opinion says that Irish people are very superstitious. I would tend to agree with this, citing moving statues and fairy sightings as high level evidence. Now I can say these things as I myself am Irish. I do not believe in crying virgin Mary's or the 'little people', but I do mentally always say 'good morning Mr. Magpie' when I see a lone magpie, I count myself lucky when a black cat crosses my path, I read my horoscopes on a fairly regular basis, I own a set of tarot cards, ...... Why admit to all of these seemigly illogical actions??....cause life is one big irony....and these things keep me entertained along the way. Do I believe in these things...I suppose not really, but I still play the game. Perception and how people understand things makes their reality, and this way I make my world a strangely interesting place full of all possibilities. Mad?..yes probably in my own way...but doesn't it make it all the more fun?!

If you look at a $1 coin, you will find superstition personified. The unusual shape of the coin is a Chinese "pa gua". It is supposed to bring good luck and be good for warding off evil spirits.

Am I superstitious? Unashamedly yes! Not that I truly believe in them, but I would like to believe that I can control my destiny just by following a set of rules. It's like bargaining with God - if I wear green every day for 7 days, please let Korea win the World Cup so I can collect on my bet.

Life is hard enough, thank goodness for the superstitions that help you avoid the pitfalls / attract good luck along the way. Now if you will excuse me, I have to get my four leaf clover pendant to help me meet my day's deadlines.
