And also, there's that new bar across the way (alley bar) which adds a little more to do in the area.  ICB is still my favorite, #5 is a close second, and now there's a third (I never go to Que Pasa).

As Mohd Sultan and Boat Quay are often filled with drunken teenagers, Emerald Hill is my favorite.  Plus, people hanging out there usually live here, as opposed to just visiting since it's not so easy to find.

Kind of confusing after reading all the messages posted in here.  Whatever dating thing you're referring....well, why don't you ask yourself what you're looking for, their looks or inner characters.  Whether or not they're local or western, they're just human with some inner or outer look.

I hope this doesn't sound too foolish coming from a guy but would you go to such places as #5 alone? I'd like to venture out but not at the expense of feeling uncomfortable amidst large groups who all know each other or work with each other. The pub atmosphere and company of other expats in the same situation as I find myself would be a very welcome change.

Well...if I feel like it, I'll go anywhere alone as long as nobody knows me especially I'm in tough day at work or home. What I want is to go to a pub fills with people.

Mayday,

On a weeknight, I would say Emerald Hill is ok for going out alone.  Ice Cold Beer would be better than #5.  Weekends, probably not.

In my opinion, Molly Malone's on boat quay is the best place in Singapore for going alone.  If you're looking to pull chicks, forget it but it's a comfortable place to go solo, have some beer and food and it's easy to talk with others there in the same situation.

Men and women have difficulty communicating with each other at the best of times, but when one partner comes from a different country things can get really difficult. We may be part of a global community, but one cannot deny the existence of certain cultural differences.

For example, my warped British sense of humour and the nuances of the English language are often misunderstood in this part of the world. No biggie, you might think, but a shared sense of humour is one of the the attributes I look for in a partner.

I might even consider downing 20 pints of guiness, followed by a little gig around the bar, if that's what it takes.
