Bah!  What's with all the ruckus about prawn shelling?  The crux of the issue here is whether some women find their motherly instincts coming to the fore more easily than others.  It's simple, really.  When you care for someone it's natural to want to pamper that person a little...be it in the form of peeling shimp, giving a massage...whatever.

Different people have different ways of displaying affection, perhaps some are too reserved to display any at all!  Possibly, Sumiko was trying to suggest that the little things DO count in a relationship.

'Nuff said...am looking for a guy who is willing to temper his innate chauvinism and feed his woman grapes

I'm looking for guy who gives great massages, but good reflexology will also suffice.

i once had to do everything for my bf...chinese Singporean....which ALSO including shelling prawns...(BIG PAMPER A$$)...but then i did it out of love but it got fruastrating to the part that he was expecting me to do it...and many other things as well....(clean his bloody place...pack his clothes...get his towel, undies, socks and shoes)...DUH!..wah lau been there done that....free maid and lover!!!and i didn't get anything in return but more expectations....yawn....glad that i gave him a kite....

I will shell willingly for any men who does not expect it to be done....in fact the other day i was shelling pistachios for a male friend (also Chinese Sporean) in Siam SC until he asked it was alright and he could do it himself..and told me to stop ruining my nails....i was bored so i was shelling and i like his attitude....said he could do it himself....love to date him ..

so i say....if the local men don't expect it so much (and i know there are still some out there, not all are dead) maybe the local women would do it more out of willingness of their love than to prove something like we 'love' him or whatever...

remember ..sporean ladies are socialized and schooled to work in the public sphere and not to serve the men (father, bro, husband) in their household in the private sphere.

i give my dad massages and iron everybody's clothes in the family but then i do it out of love not becos they expect me to. so those men in Sumiko's Tan article should wake up their bloody idea and learn from their nicer local counterparts.....and not force us to look from the other islands....

i know there are still the nice guys around....2 way give and take with their women.....hope they multiply...

If you and I hit it off, I can finally say those little words I have yet to utter: " Yes Mother.  I've met the perfect man.  And she's beautiful."

People, be nice, probably Vida who just came here had a culture shock.  Have not seen such relationship parterns in his/her hometown.  Well....does this kind of relationship really bother you or you're so curious about it?  If it's out of curiousity, what I say is this's pretty norm in every country nowadays.  If it's bothered you, think you just have to tell yourself, this's not your problem and leave it as it is.

I don't have problems deshelling a prawn without messing any of my fingers. But chilli Crabs? i think it is more romantic if a guy deshelled that for a lady,  .

damn, i've been missing out, i'm a guy and i'm the one usually doing the prawn peeling on dates
hahahah

personal fav has to be:
steam prawns.
dip in a sauce made out of fried garlic, black sauce (not the thick type, normal black soy sauce) a bit of oil from the fried garlic and a bit of sliced chilli

very nice.
and simple too!
