Well more likely tea at the end of a dinner. I'm after suggestions for something nice to take to a friends dinner party but not chocolate. I have thought of making coconut macaroons, but welcome any other suggestions.

Not sure where you are located, but in the basement of Parkway Parade there's a shop called Swiss bake (or something like that) and they do all kinds of cakes, bits and pieces of stuff - choc and non-choc.  They have quite nice wrappings too so good for a present.

or

what about bottle of something - brandy, drambuie - though prob a bit expensive out here I suppose.

Swiss Bake is nasty in my opinion. Barely a step above BreadTalk. Nasty dry chewy chewy chewy chewy stuff with no flavour.

Werner's makes nicer stuff or the place on Frankel Ave

How about some nice cheese with fresh fruit or crackers.  You can actually get some very good cheese in Singapore when you look hard enough.

yes, cheese is a good one, with some nice crackers and perhaps some grapes.

or you could go for biscotti biscuits (or whatever they are called) - those hard biscuits that they do in Italy.  some of the coffee places here sell them.

You could try making biscotti, which are crisp Italian biscuits that go well with coffee. This mixture makes about 16.
250g plain flour
175g caster sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
pinch salt
2 eggs
grated zest of 3 lemons
1 tablespoon lemon juice
100g blanched almonds, toasted and chopped
50g pistachios, chopped
Preheat oven to 180 celsius/ gas mark 4
Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix to form a dough. Roll into ball, cut in half and roll each portion into a sausage shape. Place on floured baking sheet.
Bake in oven for 10 mins. Remove from oven and cool for 5 mins, then use a serrated knife to cut into diagonal slices, 1cm thick.
Place back on baking tray and cook for a further 15 mins to turn slightly golden. Cool on a wire rack .

agree with Hummer about Swiss Bake's quality at parkway parade.

Had a sandwich for lunch and was one of the worst lunch I had in a long time... I think the bread was really stale and extremely chewy.

Better still - go local. There's a great chain of stores called Bengawan Solo.

Kueh Lopez

Otak otak

Pineapple jam tarts

Kueh lapis
