I'm trying to eat less carbs, but I like going to hawker centres.  Trouble is, I can't find much that is low carb there.  Everything that isn't a noodle or rice dish seems to be marinaded in something sweet (eg bbq pork, satay, chicken wings, even most seafood).

If anyone else eats hawker and goes low carb, I'd love to hear your tips on hawker eating.

don't you think that if they knew the answer to that they wouldn't be asking?

I doubt most people here would know exactly what a low carb diet would constitute so it would be helpful if she could explain a bit more about that...wiseguy.

No potatoes, rice, noodles etc.  So all my favourites are out, mee goreng, nasi lemak, wan ton noodles, laksa etc.

Last night I had chicken rice and didn't eat the rice, but it wasn't very filling

All in all, I find a low carb diet is pretty easy to follow, it is just hawker centre eating that poses a problem

I suppose I could just take my own salad next time the family want to go to the hawker, or get laksa without the noodles!

So does marinade on meat count as a carbohydrate?
What do you normally eat when you don't go to hawker centers?

Sorry to be nosy..

lol, I don't mind you being nosey!

it depends what is in the marinade.  For instance, any sugar, honey or syrup is out.  Satay is marinaded in something sweet so can't have that, char siew pork is on the sweetish side, so that's out too.  Once in a while wouldn't be a problem, but if you go to hawker centres often (as I did and do) then it is tricky.

If you make your own marinades at home you can use stuff like soy, worcestershire sauce, tabasco, alcohol, spices and herbs etc.  So long as they're not on the sweet or floury side, they should be OK.

At home I eat lots of salad, meat, cheese, green veggies etc (quite Mediterranean I suppose).

You can cook at home no problem, but our family like to go to the hawker centre and it gets a bit depressing eating virtually nothing

I guess your only options are to get a steak or something at the western food stall, if they have one, or maybe order half a chicken or duck, without the rice at the chicken/duck rice stall..hehe.

Your options are definitely limited since most food comes with rice or noodles at hawker centers.

Or you could try looking for hawker stalls that have beef or pork bones in soup or something and skip the rice that usually comes with it.
