Can anybody recommend a brand of really good fragrant rice that is not too expensive? The types I tried end up as mush and don't seem fragrant at all. And where do you buy it?

Any Thai Jasmine rice is considered to be fragrant rice.

The fragrance is oh so subtle, you can't really detect it.However, I personally notice the difference when I  eat Japanese rice and compare it with Thai as Japanese rice has absolutely no fragrance.

Anyway, any brand (as long as it is not on the low end) is probably safe to buy as long as it is labelled as the highest grade of Thai rice (no unbroken grains etc) You don't necessarily have to buy the most expensive brand available.

If the rice has ended up as mush, there might be a possibility that you may have added too much water to the pot. Try again and add less water, and see what happens.

I generally cook basmati, and find that the thai rice cooks to a mush no matter what I do with it (I don't have a rice cooker and can cook basmati without probs with eyes closed and hands tied behind back, hence the frustration over fragrant rice).
I've tried cooking it in just enough water (the way I do with basmati, i.e. the absorption method) as well as the cooking in lots of water and draining method, both have failed several times. Advice would be appreciated!

Where do you buy your Basmati? I am looking for those giant plastic bags of prewashed Basmati (The brand Tilda springs to mind) that I used to buy at the wholesalers in England. Otherwise, it's a pain washing and soaking for 30 minutes... Have also bought some smaller packs of prewashed Basmati from Carrefour but they are not cheap.

I buy my basmati in Little India - not Mustafa, just a little store that sells it near Tekka. I buy the best brand the store has, wash and use, I don't soak it. Boils perfectly.

mustafa has at least 5 different kinds of basmati in 10Kg packs... price $20 to $23

any cheaper than that and you might as well buy the white paste they sell as fragrant rice.

I really like Great Harvest Thai organic rice that you can get in FairPrice. It comes in a green box, and is about $3-4. It's yummy and cooks great in the microwave. They also have a brown rice version which I will try soon.
