I'm looking at going to NY at the end of July was just wondering if anyone has some suggestions on where to stay at reasonible prices in a good location, would be happy with B&B or apartments or hotels

Any information would be great

the swiss hotel is very nice, but it's a bit expensive. actually, everywhere in new york is expensive.

the swiss/drake is centrally located and easy access to good shopping areas or the subway if you want to head to greenwich.

I'm going down to NY end of July and am looking for ppl to share accommodation with. Checked on the net that sometimes they have apartments for 4-6 ppl and it works out cheaper than a hotel room and probably more secure than a backpackers dorm.

I've just seen an advert in "Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel" mag (Aug 2001 edition). The Hotel Wolcott in midtown Manhatten has a special offer. All Summer inc. weekdays & weekend they have a rate of $99US$ + tax. You have to mention booking code #1119. You can e-mail them at : sales@wolcott.com

I don't know about NYC but in the UK you can rent student campus accommodation in the Summer hols really cheaply. Maybe you can in Manhatten? You would need to contact the Visitors bureau/convention I guess.

If you don't mind the no-frills treatment, try the YMCA on 66th Street. It's got an excellent location, just about 100m from Lincoln Center, and is next to Central Park. I paid about USD60 a night for a single. It's communal facilities though.

Another hotel to try is the Herald Square on 34th Street (near the Empire State). ABout the same price as the Y I believe.  They have ensuite facilities for more. They have a sister hotel in midtown, the name of which I cannot remmeber right now, but I'm sure if you do a search on the web you'll be able to find it.

We stayed (a number of years ago) in a place called the Gershwin Hotel, just off 5th Ave (5 mins to Emp State) can't remember which street (27th?), but near Madison Square. Top location, budget prices, reasonable rooms. Was the cheapest we could find in  central NYC and had a very good atmosphere. Roof top bar/garden, can walk everywhere.

Great place, cheap, and wonderful location! Walking distance from all the Manhattan areas.

The Vanderbilt YMCA on East 47th St is also excellent. You can make a reservation, and even if you don't have any, go there at 6 pm and they'll always have a room.

hey, every time that i go visiting nyc i stay at the hotel belleclaire. very nice old hotel, last summer price was $118 usd. not bad for the city. it's on the upp west side, very convenient for walking excursions to any area of the city.
