Was thinking of Bangkok for a long weekend soon and wondered if anyone has been up since the bombings on New Year ?  Has this affected anything or is it still pretty much the same ?

haven't been there since the last problems, but we have friends living there, and they say everything is normal, and actually has been since new year.

Hi,  I've just come back from a 5 day business trip.  Absolutely fine, stayed at the sheraton grande sukhumvit.  Didn't feel in the slightest bit on edge, no visible extra security.  Just the usual precautions, hotel guards checking the boot, under the car with mirrors etc.

Go for it,

The normalcy that the last two posters observed is probably how it seemed in the weeks/days/minutes/last second before the bombs blew up, no?

Be that as it may, I won't let most terror incidents sway my travel plans unless I'm going with kids.

wherever you go, never ever ever try and cross the road - you might get hit by a bike, or worse, by a car...

I am there now.......

There are armed soldiers on the subway - all bags are being checked there is also bomb sniffing equipment on some platforms.....

In the apper this morning was an article saying the goverment is to step up the police presence in Sukhumwit and other popular areas...... there is definetly a feeling of tension around when you talk to the locals...

I ahve a feeling they know something is in the air - but this is a military government so they will not tell the people if there is.....

They say they know who planted the bombs but can't arrest them cos of no evidence !!

The bars are quiet - always a good indication of sentiments......

I do agree with one post - don't let these terrorists spoil your plans - It could happen in Singapore too in fact anywhere is a threat these days.......

Happy holidays

Of course the government know who planted the bombs and that there are going to be more attacks......I would guess that despite all the things going on in Thailand to drive the baht down, there will be more bombs soon because the baht is still too strong.

This is a military governments economic policy, to set off bombs that weren't meant to hurt but enough to see tourist numbers dwindle and foreign investment confidence get low enough to drive the currency down.

I am a long time Bangkok regular and my wife is from there, I would be very careful about my movements in lower sukhumvit in the coming weeks, especially if you get your jollys on Soi's Nana and Cowboy.....
