I've lived right next to it for the last 8 years. It gets a jet wash and clean frequently. They only refurbished it a couple of years ago.
I've never caught any bugs from eating there.
If you wander around in the day time, when most of the stalls are closed, you will see all the stainless steel counters, pots and utensils are clean.
Like someone else commented, everything that goes on is in the public eye, so at least you shouldn't find that the chef is picking his nose, like they are probably doing in the kitchens of some more up market restaurants.

Fishhead - You  should pray a lot for those prawns. After all the poor things are going to die to keep you fed.

had this perception that Newton is a tourist trap, but when I do go, it's not. And some stalls do have pretty good food.

Alternatives: near town Adam Road Hawker Centre - hand out for local artists/ celebs after their late night performances

For hawker food by the beach - with sand on your feet - Fisherman's Village in Pasir Ris

Despite the seemingly lack of hygiene, stalls are rated A,B,C,D for cleanliness and they're supposed to display that certificate. Ministry of Environment does stringent checks.... but experience shows the cleanest stalls don't sell the most delicious food....

Look Newton is fine for some not for others....if you don't like it don't go..

Mind you if it's so bad why is it always the case where you have to wait for a table...and it's not all tourists.there are many more locals there....

Newton has it's own unique character and charm....the stall holders are never a problem if you know how to deal with them.......

Locals go to newton late at night 'cos the number of places to go to is limited after midnight - not 'cos the food and atmosphere is great.

Know what you're talking about. And even when they do go there - they still say it's a ripoff - just resigned to it.

Go in the daytime and you'll see a real change in quality and price. It's grubby, you eat with disposable cutlery, quite honestly - it's all crap!

Raw prawn

You get as many local people at Newton from 7 pm onwards as after midnight. During Hari Raya there were many Muslims there waiting to break fast, as well as the Chinese coming down for Popiah, carrot cake etc; you mean they're all desperate, resigned or just dumb? Maybe you should go down there & try it, 'cos it might just get that chip off your shoulder!

try the restaurants up above Turf City, Bukit Timah or Pasir Ris park.  The prices are fixed, no such thing as tourist price.  another good seafood place is called No Signboard, but beware of what you order as large prawns & crabs are normally the most expensive stuff.
