Two questions...

We're thinking of going to Langkawi and wondered if anyone had stayed at The Datai -

1.  would you recommend it?

2.  What are the deluxe rooms like?

3.  Are The Datai and The Andaman Datai the same hotel?

Thanks for any help.

i think i saw similar posts to this else where on this board so please search

having visited but not stayed at each place then i can confirm that they are different hotels.

the datai is a tru 5 star hotel, prices and clientelle (eg. occasional movie start) to match.

personally i stayed at pelangie beach many times before but not been there for years as its gone down market a bit.

Stayed at the Datai and the Tanjung Rhu. The latter is on its own private beach on a cove (Tanjung Rhu actually means Casuarina Cove in Malay). My room was right on the beach.

The Datai is different in that it is in a rainforest setting.

Both are magnificent. Both are worth staying at. Both are expensive.

For those that never thought they'd be able to afford the Datai - they are now doing special rates for singaporean residents - about S$350 a night (usually S$860) - coooooool!  We're off there next weekend!  Will let you know if it's worth it.

My husband and I stayed at The Datai for 8 nights in 1999.  It was absolute luxury.  Bloody fantastic.  Can highly recommend it. We also had 8 nights at Tanjung Rhu which was also fantastic but not as good as The Datai.  Nicer beach at Tanjung Rhu though.  Both were expensive but worth it.

The Andaman Hotel at Datai Bay is further down the beach from The Datai - we walked through there and it looked ok but not fantastic.  Probably not as expensive though either.

We hired a car and drove around Langkawi. If you go into the main town you can buy a few basic foodstuffs, grog which will cut down on your "extras" for food and drink at the Hotels.  Both Datai and Tanjung Rhu are quite remote and you have no choice but to eat in the restaurants which aint cheap.

Enjoy>

Sorry forgot to answer question two.
Can't say what the Deluxe rooms are like but would say they are pretty plush.
We upgraded to a Villa which was fantastic - ask for one down the hill closer to the beach.

We just returned from a week at The Datai. Yes, it is a luxury resort but it is remote and on very hilly terrain. It is not for anyone who would have difficulty walking up and down many, many steps. We actually were quite bored after a few days. There is nothing to occupy you after a bit. I did tremendously enjoy a wonderful massage at the Mandara Spa. Actually it was truly heavenly. The food is quite nice but it is not anything more than one would expect at such a resort. The pools are quite ordinary rectangles. We had a deluxe room and it was very nice. I rather liked the lanai area for lounging and resting. The rainforest is awesome. The Silky Oaks Lodge in Australia is similar but has more to offer while maintaining absolute privacy. The Datai is to be experienced but not my cup of tea for a return visit.

Yes Daniella I agree there is nothing to do there - which is why we love it.  I could do with a trip there now (minus my 15 month old).

Haven't been to Silky Oaks though everything I've heard is good.
