There is a bed and breakfast place called The Heeren Hotel which is supposed to be nice.  Saw it when we were there - it overlooks the river I think.

Would recommend the Hotel Puri.

Expatriate Trvale.com will help you coordinate the booking. Go to thier Malaysia Section and see Malacca.

Heeren House is a more homey "B&B" style place which is in an ideal spot right next to the river (such as it is!).  Puri is a bit further up the street but still in the old part of town.

For value for money, I am afraid I have defected to Puri as I thought Heeren was quite pricey last time we stayed there.  If you book on line you can get a pretty good room rate.  www.hotelpuri.com.my  (I think).

Make sure you go for the boat trip with Bernard (the guide) - best laugh I've had in a l-o-n-g time.  (Behind the tourist officein the main tourist area).
