Has anyone ever been to Phuket's Rydges resort? I realise it would not be to Laguna stanard, but it is also much cheaper.
Is it well located for trips into town?? Also...is July an OK time to visit, taking into account the rainy season?
Any help is much appreciated.

We (hubby, baby and I) just came back from a week's stay at Rydges Royal Beach Resort, BangTao. It's not as plush, modern and spread-out as the Laguna but my hubby loved it because the hotel had a lovely casual 'olde' feel to it. They've just renovated the hotel so the facilities are simple, clean and nice. The staff were friendly and most helpful. Because we went in May (start of the monsoon season), most of the guests were honeymooning or older couples from Europe/Australia. My daughter was a bit lonely (no families around) but as it was the low season, there were plenty of staff members for her to play with and they loved 'carrying' her about, giving us a bit of rest.
There is a taxi/private car rank just in front of the hotel and it was very easy for us to get into Patong (20 minutes by car) and the city. We also hired a car with a driver (from this same rank) for 3-4 hours and he just took us where we wanted to go. Of course, the hotel provides its own car/limosine service which was a trifle bit more expensive. There is also a day and night shuttle bus that goes into Patong.
As for the weather, we went in May, which was the beginning of the rainy season, so we had typical days where it would rain solidly for 2-3 hours, with the sun peeking out at intervals. I understand that with the monsoon season, some or most of the beaches would have their 'red' flags out....strong undercurrents etc. In any case, Rydges has a nice beach area as well.

Hope I've been of some help, enjoy your stay in Phuket.

Thanks Jen,

Can you tell me how much the 20 min trip to Patong was?

Also, how often does the shuttle bus run from the hotel to Patong? ie. every hour?

Thanks again

Hi again,

I have to say that we never took the shuttle bus into Patong but from what I remember, it ran at least five times a day (the last run into Patong was about 7:30 pm, with the pick-up being 11:30 pm). I think it cost at least 100 Bt one-way, 200 Bt return. We rather spoilt ourselves by hiring one of those taxis with a driver for 800 Bt (but I suspect one could haggle it down) and he took us where ever we wanted plus waited for us, for the entire day/night.
