I'm off to Sydney next week and still haven't booked a hotel. As I have never been there before, I would appreciate recommendations for nice hotels at apprx. A$100 max.

I may be able to help, although not sure what you'll get for just $100 per night.  Where abouts did you want to stay - CBD/North Sydney or suburbs?

Karena, as I'm traveling alone I would prefer to stay somewhere central. I read about some hotels in the Potts Point area, but am not sure if that's a a good location.
Thanks very much for your help!

Try the Metropole in Cremorne on Military Road. Its only a 10 min bus to the city centre, and whilst I'm not certain I think the rooms come in around $100

Also the Periwinkle Guest House at Manly. Right next to the beach and close to the ferry for journeys into town. Again, around $100 per night.

Potts Point is a bit trendy but basically right next to Kings Cross - the Red Light district of Sydney.  In fact, if you use the rail in sydney you'd be getting off at Kings Cross Station and walking through the worst of it.

I'd go with Bewildered's suggestions or there are some hotels near Central Station.  There is a NSW tourism web site but I had trouble locating it!

i've just returned from my first visit to sydney where i stayed at the Gazebo hotel. it cost around $100 a night and altho' it was next to King's X, the views it offered were fantastic (ask for a Tower room overlooking Elizabeth Bay). King's Cross was colourful, but honestly no worse than dodgy parts of any other big city, plus it was colourful (!). It's also around the corner from Pott's Point, which had some really good cafe's and a good walk down to Wooloomooloo Bay and the Botanic Gardens (gorgeous. If not - try lastminute.com.au for good last-minute offers. Friend found a great hotel w 50% discount! Good luck and have fun!
