Can anyone recommend a nice cottage/cabin we can rent in the Hunter Valley.  I've come across many on a Hunter Valley website, but wonder if anyone has any personal recommendations.

Thanks in advance

Private rentals are available through the web. But if you are thinking of a guesthouse I cannot recommend anything near Margaret River as much as Karriview Lodge.

Well there you go. I got so excited about telling you to go to Karriview Lodge that I didn't read that you were asking about Hunter Valley which, of course, is nowhere near Margaret River! Sorry!

The Hunter Resort is good, but it is a good modern "motel style" with high timber ceilings and lots of light - vines grow right up to the back door - ever so peaceful in the morning.  Also has an excellent restaurant and winery - one of the first to have accomodation in the Hunter Valley. It is right in the middle of a vineyard at the quiet end of the valley towards the New England Highway.  Had excellent service when I was there, but I would think most places are good.  Not sure if you are looking for something like this though?

For something out of the ordinary/quirky, also check out the Wollombi pub on your way back to Sydney - typical Aussie pub, but they also sell a viscious port called "Jungle Jim's Jungle Juice" - goodness knows where it comes from.  The village is a bit of a detour, but the drive is nice, through some big forests and away from the freeway.
