Police records are typically based on your full name and date of birth, plus having your addresses will make checking records relatively easy.

Australia asks you to obtain certificates from the police force of any country in which you have lived for more than 6 months in the previous 10 years. I suspect that the SIR ask for your addresses over the past 5 years for the same reason, the implication being that they do not check any further back than this.

CS is quite definite about his opinions, and I'm inclined to think that he is correct. Most countries do keep central criminal records, and there must surely be established protocols for exchanging informations about criminals.

Another question is what types/severity of criminal offences would result in a refusal of an EP or PR? Drug and sex offences are likely to be taken very seriously I'm sure.

Since we both don't work for SIR, we can only speculate. I have no idea how they would confirm you are John Smith the IT guy and not John Smith the serial rapist. Makes you kind of wonder if all things check out and you are still rejected ...

On consent, I believe you actually gave this when you signed the forms. I remember reading a part about how by signing the form, you give consent for SIR to confirm what you have claimed in your application.

Thanks for all the feedback, VERY much appreciated.

OK any suggestions as to how we might actually find out for certain. I don't mind paying to see a legal advisor or similar, and I'd be happy to post the findings back on the board.

No way you can find out for certain. Singapore MP's regualrly ask abt SIR's immigration criteria every year during the annual budget debate. And every year we get the same response about how the process and criteria needs to be kept confidential to prevent abuse.

The best you can do is go down to SIR and politely request to speak to a senior officer with regard to some immigration questions. From there, you can then see what you can do to prise out some nuggests of information.

No point getting a lawyer or some immigration "professional".They carry  absoultely zero weight with SIR.

Surely if an offence was committed 17 years ago and there have been no further convictions in that time then the record is considered "spent"? Especially so I would think if the person was under 21 at the time the offence was committed. Look at all the rock artistes who have performed in Sing who have been known to have a history of drug-taking.

I guess if you are applying for PR then they would make stringent checks but not so much for EP holders. I personally would apply for the job anyway (I'd go down to the local copshop back home and have a friendly chat with an officer to see what they have to say about foreign govts. making checks and what sort of information is given out or considered as "spent". You may then decide whether or not to reveal the minor drug conviction on your EP application). If the Sing govt. rejects you then so be it - and if the worst comes to the worst after getting your EP they would just tell you to pack up and go home...

Thanks again CS.

I'm a bit worried that it might get back to my employer, they would want to know why the EP has been rejected and this could potentially have serious career implications.

The biggest question yet in my mind, assuming they do check criminal records, is whether there is a 5 year limit. I don't want to get this wrong, which would mean that I could never enter Singapore again, which would be difficult to explain to my employer as I often have to travel there.

Which rock artist that has a history of drug abuse performed in Singapore? Even if SIR let them in, the Singapore police are pretty stringent abt granting a Public Entertainment license. It is therefore unlikely that they would give it to a band whose members are high profile junkies.

Chinese products usually lack quality, usability and proper user-exerpeince. Not to mention reliability.
You don't see this sorta shit from Japan and Korea. Just from China and Singapore.

Must be a Chinese and/or Indian thing.

Hi,

Do they also check education background? I already have more then 5 years of exp in IT sector  and currently I am working for a MNC and offered salary is more then 6000 $ but I have done my degree by a collage/university which is not well know and not listed in Singapore MOM website.

Is there any chance to get it approved? Do they tell us about the cause of rejection?
