Hi all.  I have just arrived in Singapore with my partner as part of a year long round trip.  Our intention was to find some temporary employment in the city for approximately 3 months.  We are both honours graduates from British Universities and have experience ranging from Admin to Call Centre set up, some clerical and export along the way (between us that is).  What are your opinions on the likelihood of us being able to get any work on this basis and would you say that it would be a good or bad idea to stay here for any lenght of time.  Also we do not have work permits so can we apply in the meantime or will companies just not entertain us without them?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks

Hi Cath

In order to work here you need to be sponsored by a company that means that you need to find a job first and then that company will apply for your employment pass for you (a work permit is mainly for labourers).

Another way around this is to set up your own company and sponsor your own employment pass - to do this you need to have a $3000 bank guarantee. Then you can seek work legally.

If I were you though if you only want to spend 3 months here I wouldn't bother - go to Australia - Singapore is expensive and will be a drain on your travelling fund - also if you are not working there isn't much to see after you've spent 2-3 days sightseeing!  Good luck!

Does $3K SGD is the only thing required ?

- Does getting his own EP is very hard
 when you go sole proprietor
as in not sponsored by a singaporean
 based company.
- Do you need also need a business plan ?
- How hard is it to get if you're
already on an EP sponspored by an employer
- If I want to be sole proprietor is there
any benefits in being a PR ?
A major disadvantages is that 20% of
what you make go into CPF, which
 is not too good.
