I am in the states at the moment, planning on making the leap across the Pacific to Singapore.

I applied for my EPEC and got approved for it within 2 days.

Now what? I am a bit confused.

Do I have to apply for a social visit pass too? Do I need an entry visa?

They told me once I arrive in Singapore I can take my EPEC to XYZ address and at least I thought I can stay and look for jobs and have fun for 12 months.

I intend to get a job of course, which at that time I will apply for an actual EP through my employer.

I am kind of confused on how to use and how this EPEC works.

Not exactly.

The wording on the document I recieved contradicts and adds more stuff to what I read on the sg web page when I first applied.

For example, because I am a US citizen it said on the net that I do not need an entry visa.

On the EPEC document though it says that I may apply for one.

Turns out they use a general form for all countries(I guess), some of which need an entry visa others do not. Fortunately I do not.

Also the EPEC that I intially applied for said it allowed a 12 month stay where I could look and apply for work while living in Singapore.

On the actual EPEC form though, it says I may have to apply for a Social Visit Pass once I get to Singapore. It explicitly states that the Social Pass (not the EPEC) is what grants the 12 month status.

It definately implies that I may need to "apply" again for a Social Pass.

I thought the EPEC gave me Social Pass status? If not, what is the EPEC good for?

My assumption is after exchanging emails with others, is:

1. I don't need an entry visa because certain countries don't need it. I get 30 days free.

2. Upon arrival I turn in my EPEC and they either make me a) apply for a Social Pass, or b) they just swap the EPEC form for the Social Pass.

If I need to "apply" for the Social Pass, then I want to go ahead and do that. If its a situation where they just swap it, then I don't need to do anything.

Once I am offered employment then I apply for a regular EP via the employer, on whatever type of EP I end up with.

What I applied for says one thing, but the form I got says something different and extra not mentioned before.

Hence I am checking here for someone who has gone through the process before and can tell me for sure.

Its a simple question actually.

From the web page:

"The EPEC facilitates job search by granting the holder up to 1-year Social Visit Pass (SVP)."

I take this as meaning they will just give me the SVP upon arrival.

From the EPEC document:

"This certificate does not exempt the holder from applying for an entry visa."

"The holder may, after arrival in Singapore apply...for a longer term Social Visit Pass, valid for up to 12 months to enable him/her to seek employment."

I dont see anything contradictory there, all makes perfect sense.

If you are still in doubt ring them up and ask.

Also, another question I have is not specific to the EPEC...

I somehow will end up with a SVP (for now).

My next question is a general one...

On and SVP or an EP do they allow multiple entry into and out of Singapore? Are there any restrictions on the number of entries and exits to and from Singapore?

I did email to the agency here in the states that issued the epec. They are very good at emailing me back, but they didn't know the other answer.

They did tell me I didn't need a visa because I am a US citizen, but regarding the SVP they didn't know.

I was hoping to find someone helpful here that has used and EPEC. They could tell me in 10 seconds, but so far nothing constructive is being said to help me.

All I am trying to figure out is, is there the possibility I get all the way to Singapore and they tell me 'no way' on the SVP?

Unlikely, if you have an EPEC it's pretty much a formality to get the SVP... BUT it's never a guaranteed thing as all immigration folks will tell you. I'm looking at Belgian paperwork on behalf of a friend relocating there, and printed very clearly across all their documents is that a visa is NOT an entitlement. I'd imagine the same applies here. In principle yes, but no guarantee.

Those of us that have been here a while didnt come over on spec using an EPEC.  (The only job you are likely to get is one on local terms on conditions, you will be in the job queue with the the rest of the locals, those from the region and those from around the world)   Therefore we cant answer on something we havent had experience on.

Ring/email MoM and ask them the questions you want an answer to.  Anything from this firum is likely to be anecdotal

Regarding employment I should do fine.

I am fluent in Mandarin with 5 plus years banking experience, and with several years of MNC financial analysis exp in Asia at the exec level.

Also I will be setting up a company here in the states as well shortly, as well as possibly a subsidiary in Singapore.

I may be creating my own job and a few others before its all over.

you just fill in an  application  form  for  a  SVP (at Singapore Immigration Building)  and attach a copy of your EPEC along. It took me less than a week to get approval for my long-term SVP. But, then again, I'm from Malaysia. So, it's usually much faster for Malaysians.

You could get up to one year SVP without a sponsor having to sponsor your SVP application. It's multiple entry visa. I came in and out of Singapore 2-3 times with my SVP before I manage to get a job. When you apply for EP, make sure you attach the EPEC too. This will increase your likelihood of getting your EP approved.

To OP:

I've been in your situation.
Hopefully this will help...

You don't swap your EPEC for a SVP. You keep the EPEC and get a LTSVP (12 months) on arrival in Singapore. You have to go to the ICA for this. I took my EPEC to interviews with me to demonstrate to a future employer that should they apply for an EP for me, it's almost guaranteed to be approved (that's why it's called an Employment Pass Eligibility Certificate). The EPEC isn't a visa and doesn't entitle you to stay in Singapore, what it entitles you to is the LTSVP.
