Like to comment on  the above if you dont mind..
As a headhunter, we try our best to educate both the candidates and the clients in terms of discrimination, job scope, available talent in Singapore or elsewhere..and most of clients are pretty open to us..afterall, they need to find someone who can fit the culture of the "company"...this works to the benefit of the candidate as well..aside from the job, one has to feel that they are able to blend in...

In terms of expats getting jobs here..Singapore promotes foreign talent ..however, there are criterias in terms of skills needed, qualifications...afterall, your work pass has to be approved by MOM where majority of companies dont have the authority to do so..

So discrimination is your own perception..Are you able to welcome "change" and learn something new..or do you have a mindset? There is no right or wrong...

Good headhunters match personalities to personalities and to culture...which creates a win win situation for all.

So if you are not able to get that job ..find out what are the skills that are urgently needed in that particular country..this helps..

Thank you for your time

HH,

You seem genuine and I am a seeker.  I have experience and qualifications and interested in a senior appointment and am flexible (negotiable) about (almost) all things.  I have a good cv (... I think...!?) and if you have some connections, maybe we shoudl connect.  My email is terak@iname.com  Drop me a note and perhaps we can talk by phone.

I think its not discrimination, but because they're "misled" in thinking that foreigners from certain countries (USA, UK, etc.) are getting more money than they do for a "similar" position.

Singapore has a very open policy in accepting foreign worker, compared to other countries.

Just my 2 cents...

TMP is tmp.com is monster.com is a combined recruiter/search firm/internet recruiter etc etc.  They are global and big but have some BAD press and reportedly fail miserably to act professionally but then this behaviour seems to be the signature of the exec search/HeadHunter industry.

Read on McDuff.  These fine threads paint an interesting picture of the head hunters and their lack of professional ethics and what they do (or fail to do).

Hi I am sorry to add this but I have to.

I was in Australia studying and then got a job there and let me tell you it was hard. No one wanted a new grad with no job skills. I was pretty annoyed cos back in SG i would be hot property (or that's what i thought). Eventually got a job in Melb, and worked myself up. Then i came back to SG with a few years experience. After all this was my birth country and why would I problems getting a job. Well here are the problems:
1) Mandarin-I couldnt speak it so I wouldnt fit in.
2) Chinese-I wasnt Chinese so I wouldnt fit in
Of course all this was told to me by a receptionist who couldn't speak English.
Of course my story doesn't end with a beautiful dream job despite the odds.

NO ladies and gentlemen!! After being asked questions of the potential fertilisation of my eggs, i was offered a job in a company where everyone speaks in Mandarin all the time, even in meetings. So the moral of the story is in Singapore if you are not chinese you just can't win.

PS. Its a joke that they think the Aussies are racist. Please!!!  The pot cant call the kettle black.

Focus on the subject of the thread people!  Jobs!  Where are they?  Who's got them to offer to newbies, people in need of change and seasoned experts!  We know the headhunters suck but let's not hijack this as a racist thread!

Jobseaker, if you look in the Straits Times Recruitment section you can find names for headhunters at TMP and any other recruitment agency you care to contact. I would have a conversation with them as a starting point and take it from there. You could also directly approach companies you are interested in as well as talk to local expat organisations who may be able to offer advice or point you in the right direction.

Hi guys, It's been long time I m again reading opinions in expat singapore. well,What to so say..about the controversy of discrimination. To be frank,I too believe that singapore has lots of discrimination as far as Indians are concerned.I being a foreigner here has really come across many incidences.I m trying to find job here past 11 months, infect could manage to find many but all the times difficulties in getting my EP approved.Due to problems getting extensions on social visit pass, I have to keep flying up and down every 3 months. It's so damn expensive but what to do?This country has it's own rules and regulations for not allowing couples to stay together.I m one of the victim.Anyways..nothing else to say..at times it's too frustrating.
Some one please tell me what is this TMP etc, like Tristan, I too wish to know about it and try my luck if something can still happen. If I still have chances for getting job along with EP approved or may be now the circumstances are such..may be ready to work without EP too.
Some one please help.
thanks,
