Hi,
I'm a US citizen and will soon be marrying a Singapore citizen who is currently
attending graduate school in the US.  When she's done with her program next
May, we'll both move back to Singapore.  We plan to live there four to five
years and then return to the US.

I am a software engineer at a small US company and plan to continue working for
the same company remotely from Singapore (out of our home).  My current salary
is at least standard for software engineers with several years of experience in
the US.  The company is happy to make any arrangements necessary for me to work
from Singapore.

I need to know what the best methods are for obtaining permission to live in
Singapore for 4-5 years and work for my present company.

Thanks!

congratulations. once u've married the girl, all prob is no prob.

u can get a dependent's pass. then finding work on tt pass won't be such a prob ... i meant luck do play a major part considering how hard up the economy is now. but still if u can't find one, u can live off her ... if she herself can find a job. Degree or not, lady luck's the word.

but really, why bother coming here at all if u decide to go back US later...

Doesn't it seem logical to you that if the company is going to keep you on as an employee that they will assist you in getting an EMPLOYMENT PASS? The fact that the company isn't here will be a drag but they can set you up as a "representative office" or something.

Sounds like you really haven't thought things through at all- starting with marrying a Singaporean. Wait'll she gets back here, starts wearing old t-shirts and dragging her feet in flip-flops down to the hawker centre for a bowl of chicken's feet soup.

You'll wonder what you were thinking. I give it 18 months.

dct - just ignore the usual joke posters.

If the two of you are married you should be able to get a dependents pass when you move to Singapore which will allow you to stay in the country with your wife no problem.

As for the working part, am not so sure. One option would be if your company set you up as a kind of one-man representative office here. Another option would be for you to set up your own 'company' here, for which you would then effectively be working for your current company as a freelance. I guess one of the major complications either way will be with regards to tax though.

Sorry I can't be of more help. May be worth checking the Singapore Ministry of Manpower website.
