I was filing US tax return online

I was told that because I did not live abroad more than 330 days in 2004 (I moved to Singapore in April, 2004) that I was not entitled to the US$80,000 exemption.

Because of this what I supposedly owe the US government just went up substantially. Plus I will have to pay the Singapore government tax money (as expected).

Is there anything I can do to avoid having to pay twice?

Thanks in advance

There's lots you can do but since you seem relatively clueless (I don't mean that in a bad way, just that it is a complex area that is difficult to explain via a msg board), I recommend you talk to one of the local US tax advisors.  Either that or start reading all of the tax forms and pulications relating to Bona-fide residence, Form 1116 and Form 2555.

Not fun, but probably worth the effort.

You can pro-rate the $80k exclusion and you can get a credit for what you pay in SG taxes.  You also get an automatic 2 mos. extension because you live overseas so don't sweat the 4/15 deadline.
