you will probably not save any money if you want to have a decent life here... I and my wife spend about 50k a year on expenses including travelling...and have a reasonably decent lifestyle...(condo, car etc...of course we live away from the main city so save a lot on rent)....but we are currently in a saving mode rather than spending...and live modestly BTW...50K is just expenses..we make much more than that...so 40k expenses should be manageable but u have to save money and keep some buffer instead of living hand to mouth every month... But if your partner gets a job too that can suddenly change and you can start saving some money too

At the moment I am not sure of the other benefits in the compensation package and I will have to clear that out with the employer. Looking to live in a 1 or 2 BR flat (does not need to be big and complete with amenities like pool and gym). Does not really need to be close to CBD. No plans of having a car. My wife plans to work but we don't expect her to get similar salary. Eat out once in a while, minimal shopping. We we're hoping to save some money every month. Probably shop in our home country which is cheaper.

That is a crap wage. Considering condos cost around $5000 a month as the norm. 12 x 5000 = $60 000 a year just for housing. Goodness know how you will live and eat on $40 000 a year. Do you get any other benfits?

bollocks, lowage, i pay 1.5 rent a month for a newly renovated black & white walk-up apartment near HV, 3 bedrooms, 125 sq mtrs. it can be done cheaper, don't know if i could do it for 40 but you don't need 5k for rent. utter nonsense.

That is more than enough for a single person. Most locals get by on 1500 a month and many expats here are on about 250 a month with accomodation supplied.

We have been struggling to maintain what we consider a fairly average lifestyle on 40K a month.. Seriously. We are not extravagant by any means but will not compromise on housing and schooling. Every cent of our income is accounted for every month. We rarely splurge and buy few luxuries. It's all relative of course, but we are thinking of packing up and leaving as we are finding it hard to maintian our accustomed lifestyle here on this income.

If you are used to more of a western life (US, Australia, UK, etc) .. then dont relocate for SGD$40k/yr. Life will be too tough. About $60k+ is the bare minimum for a comfortable life.

thanks for the replies. looks like mixed reactions... some might make it, some cannot. with regards to western living, i don't know what that really means. but i will come from a south east asian country. maybe i will require less to maintain my current lifestyle (although Singapore has higher cost of living). i will be looking to have some savings but i don't think that's possible with 40k. i will surely negotiate. keep the replies coming.
