Yes and No. Go to Ministry of Health web at www.gov.sg  and look under departments/ministries. There is a pre-approved list of UK universtities MD degrees that are recognized. But if yours is on it, it does not mean you can open shop on your own like that. Also important is are you GP or specialist that they need in Singapore. Is they really need you, than approval is much easier.

To get full registration it requires you to work for the government for about 3 years. Another option would be since you are joining your husband to see if you can work at one of the expat frequented clinics. Remember I saw an ad somewhere recently asking for expat docs and nurses. This may also do away with culture shock between your UK education and approach toward patient care and treatment and what the local population expects of a doctor.

Hi there, I too am a UK qualified Dr who has just arrived in Singapore. In order to work you have to be registered with the SMC. If you qualified at either Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford, or London, your qualifications are registrable. If not, you will need to contact the SMC to determine what other requirements are needed ( Silly, I know, as all UK medical degrees are of equal standing!)
However, the SMC also requires a whole myriad of paperwork in addition to all your original certificates, so its worthwhile trying to accumulate all this prior to you coming ( I'm finding it very slow going trying to do it from here).
1. All your original certificates
2. Transcripts of all your examination results for every year of undergraduate medical studies (!)
3. Copies of documentary proof of housemanship training with details on the period spent in each discipline.
4. Certificate of Service working experience for the past 10 years from the supervising Medical Doctors or Institions concerned indicating grade of emplyment, nature of work, period of employmernt and assessment of work performance.
5. Certificates of GMC registration
6. Letter of employment from prospective employer.

In addition, you have to arrange for the following to be sent directly to the SMC
1. Current certificate of Good Standing from the GMC
2. If you are just qualified,  a testemonial from the Dean of your Medical School attesting your character
3. Letters of verification from issuing authorities on all post/ undergraduate training.

As you can see , it's a major job just assimilating all this paperwork!

I contacted a lady called Yvonne Yee from the SMC for this info, via the Ministry of Health Webpage. You can also try emailing them directly on moh_smc@moh.gov.sg or calling them on +65 3259068 or +65 325 9015 or fax +65 224 1677.

As you can see, you need to get a  job offer before the SMC will process all the rest. You haven't mentioned what your speciality is, but personally speaking as a  GP, there has been no problem finding employment opportunities.

So, good luck. If you want any further advice let me know, although I'm pretty new here myself!

Dear Brit Wife 2
Thanks for the information, I qualified from cambridge so at least that part is easy .....seems like a mountain on other work is needed though ! I've been working for the pharmaceutical industry for the last few years so it might be easier to stick to that. Do you have to go through all this just to be able to prescribe for family etc. or just if you want a proper job ?

How long have you been in Sing ? & are you having fun ??

If it is of any interest to either of you two ladies I can give you details of a super practice who are looking for ex-pat doctors. They are Mel & Partners at either Holland Grove Road (tel 463 6900) and Orchard Road (tel 735 2868). They always have a sign up trying to recruit and have been advertising locally for a while. Contact Sally at Holland Grove Road (practice manager)
